I shot Magix Vegas Pro Edit 15 for 20 € or so, among some other software, in a Humble Bundle. I really like it. Already been using Vegas Movie Studio, and Vegas Pro Edit 14 before Pro Edit 15. Easy to use, and great functionality.

Hitfilm Express and Davinci Resolve still have their free version that, as far as I know, can deal with hi quality audio...

Are there other free comparable alternatives?

Has this thread been edited? I thought the topic title was something like "Which DAW has the best video editor", or something... at least I replied to that with my post above. There was nothing saying that it should be free.

If it wasn't and I was just being confused, then just ignore what I wrote above. Even though I DO think it's worth to look into some payware. I fiddled with some free editors before as well (VirtualDub, or Avidemux), and, they were inferior (surprise surprise).

Of course, it depends what you want to do really. I still cut the commercials from the recordings of my online virtual video recorder service with VirtualDub, simply because I know how to do it, as there are some codec specific pecularities, which I wouldn't know how to solve in Vegas Pro Edit.

there was one asking that in hosts, it was bumped earlier.
think you may have just got them mixed up

you probably saw "video" and went on autopilot

i think a 15 whatever currency is allowed tbh, it's pretty much free

i missed the humble bundle, but years ago bought a magix thing, was great. still have the disc...
sadly like an idiot, bought a pc with no disc drive

states at pile of sample and host project files burned to disc...

Davinci Resolve has a learning curve but it is worth it if you're doing things like color grading, keying, and more. The node-based workflow is so much more organized and ultimately faster. They have video tutorials that'll get you up to speed real quick. Version 17 adds Fairlight, an audio workflow. It's obviously not as powerful as a full-fledged DAW but it comes with video-oriented FX and you can have it use VST2 plugins.

Personally, I prefer doing audio in my DAW then bringing it back into Resolve for rendering. It can render with presets for various platforms, and it can upload directly on finish.

An external usb disc drive wouldn't cost much. Just plug it in when you want to read a disc.

Resolve is free and made for audio. (there is a paid version of course but it's for a professional networked whole crew kind of thing)
Cubase destroyed their replace audio in video probably not long after I pointed to it. For years, nothing, now you can even render a video in it. But it's restricted to 16-bit. So I started using Resolve at that juncture, 9 or 9.5, just to stick some 24-bit PCM in the video, and learned basic editing in it.
You can force a super-high, 6k timeline, so it lives up to its name. Which I do to force youtube to use the Opus codec.
OTOH Final Cut Pro X's audio render is inexplicably poor (sounds bad in the project to begin with), have no idea why.
