NI Thrill uses four layers and an XY control interface. Its design is very involved with a lot of control over timbre and microtuning of elements of the layers. SonicCouture Geosonics uses three layers with somewhat different goals but also very detailed control. To me the latter is a little like using a three-oscillator synth, cf., Absynth (hard L/C/hard R paradigm).

Also SC Haunted Spaces, in the XY Thrill paradigm basically. And they make some presets in add-ons which I think are fantastic.

A 3D Sound Blender
CUBE is a 3D space for morphing between different samples. Each corner of the cube is a sound and you can use the orb in the middle to blend these sounds together. The closer the orb is to a corner, the louder the sound will be. Drag the orb with your mouse, control it with external hardware, or choose from over 40 automatic orbit motion paths.
