So for recording a lot of melodic hardcore/skate punk type stuff I want to get that type of 800 sound that many of the bands I like used. Everyone from Rise Against to Bad Religion to Lagwagon has used one. Any owners of the real thing or know that sound I'm talking about feel free to jump in.

I've narrowed it down to:

-Neural DSP's Nolly or Fortin Cali
-Mercurial Spark
-Softube's Marshall JMP 2203
-Kuassa's Caliburn
-Amped ML800

Note that I know that Fortin and Nolly have other amps in them and that gives them some more value.

I'm leaning towards what sounds more...real? alive? analog? One of those words. I know it's never going to be 100% real sounding, but like with analog synth sim plugins, they've come a long way and can get preeeeeetty close.

Get AmpliTube 5 CS. It has the best JCM 800 model (Brit 8000). And it's 100% free.

BTW, last time I saw Rikk Agnew play live, he was using a Peavey 5150.

eXe ClassicM. Free, and sounds/feels right (both squishy and responsive!), like all their sims.
Wait... loot _then_ burn? D'oh!

Amplitube's Brit wasn't that good. Might just be their cabs but from what I herd, not a lot of air.

it's entirely up to your taste. i prefer Kuassa 800, but there's been a number of great 800 sims like the Nembrini, the Mercuriall, etc. why are you asking our opinion on a plugin you will be using? of the list you mentioned, you can't really go wrong with either one of them, so take your pick.
I don't know what to write here that won't be censored, as I can only speak in profanity.

Just picked up the Softube 59 & Jubilee models on a subscribers deal & have to say they sound great to my ears. The Nembrini's are also excellent.
'and when we got bored, we'd have a world war...'

Note: Don't underestimate the quality of 3rd party Marshall Cab IRs either.

To answer this, it's because I assume there might be someone out there who has experience with real Marshall tones that has also used the plugins I mentioned that can give me an opinion on how they all stack up against each other.

Since 2020 I would go with the Nembrini MrH810 v2.

This actually sounds really good. With my Ownhammer IRs this might be a great option. Kind of torn on Nolly and this now. Might just get both but I'll demo them for a bit and see what I like more. Spark is also really good.

Lot of choices I guess and these 3 aren't bad.

3rd party IRs aren’t nearly flexible enough. It’s like using a sample library. You only get the sound they give you.

If you’re not getting the tone you want from AT5 it’s because you’re not working with it deeply enough. Grab the mics and move them around, or pull up the room mic and pull down the close mic(s) in the mixer. You’ll get air.

Also, for a JCM 800, you *need* an overdrive pedal. Diode Overdrive does a good enough job, though I prefer the Satch Overdrive or VariDiode+ in AT5 because they're very good models of probably the best overdrive pedals of all time: the BOSS OD-1 and MXR Distortion+, respectively (and JCMs love both!)

Set the gain to about 75% on the JCM, and use the overdrive to get you the rest of the way. That’s how it was done in the ‘80s.

Considering the guy who used to work at marshall created his own sim called scuffham s-gear. It's an amazing guitar sim. Imo the best

Where's the download? Their site is kind of a mess, though I trust you that it sounds good.
