conclusion after owning it for a few months is that i *would* like to mod it, within reasonable bounds, because i've explored the limits of the original sound (insofar as it might be accurate or not), and feel ready to take it a bit further, without straying too far. being able to tweak a little more out of it would be nice. and very pleased it isn't an item 'worth' 2000eu.
The original machine will always be appealing as it is, but the mods really give you lots of new possibilities. Please check the Avalon videos on my channel and you’ll be pleasantly surprised about what you can get from a 303-sound engine. I really hope that Behringer comes out with an “extended” version.

In my perception Behringer's prices went up a while ago, and then down like you said - I was thinking perhaps they had further optimized their manufacturing process???

Not sure if their planned move to mostly direct resale is connected in any way, as Thomann (suspected to be one of the 4??? third party vendors that will remain) was among the retailers offering a huge discount, their price is up again now but IIRC not as high as it used to.

Not long ago I wouldn't have imagined Behringer as a hardware synth maker.
Smart move....

I think the point of some of the mods is to make it sound a bit more like a real 303...

To my ears, it's slightly off the mark, and slightly in uncanny valley.

edit: totally misread, thought it said why would someone want to mod a TD-3...

Maybe because as a synthesizer, the 303 clones can be brought into alien territory with some mods. You can still get you beloved and classic 303 sound and then go beyond that if needed. That’s for me the point in using electronic instruments.

A good example of that is the Avalon Bassline. It can be only 303 if you like it or something completely different. I like to support my words with facts, so at the risk of making self promotion, this is the playlist with my Avalon examples:

Another example of abused TD-3.
