My next machine will be a M1 iMac but not one of these. I'm curious to see what the second-gen MBA, MBP and Mini bring as far as spec bumps to get an idea of what improvements future M1 iMacs will have.

The new iMacs scream general purpose consumer computer. I'm much more interested in their 27" replacement which we'll hopefully see either at WWDC or later this fall.

But that was in Ableton. So I thought I'd compare Logic - 16 again. A draw.

Ah, but Pigments is not native - at least I don't think it is. As far as I understand it - not very far - a non-native Silicon plug-in needs to run via a Rosetta translation wrapper in Logic, so that might slow it down.

So I tried Hive, which is native, and this is where it gets a bit weird.

Logic: 26 instances
Live 11.0.5b1: 30 instances in Session view, 31 instances in Arrangement view.

(both running with 512 buffers)

That's strange though isn't it? I would have expected more Hives in Logic because it should all be seamlessly optimised Silicon.

Now, Logic and Live behave differently when you get close to overload - Logic cuts out and gives you a warning dialogue box, whereas Live keeps going and just starts to degrade, crackle and start slowing down. Maybe there were crackles or other imperfections I didn't notice with Live when I got past 26/27, and maybe Logic was just more cautious and making sure I couldn't do anything reckless.

But still. Maybe the whole Rosetta issue isn't as big a deal as I thought, in terms of performance at least.
What are settings in logic?
You need to set multithreading manually. I get way more tracks with hive

I'll have a look at the settings - how do I set up multi threading?

8 (4 performance cores)

process buffer to “medium”

Auto settings in Logic/M1 are garbage

They look like an iPad on a stick :)

Ah that's more like it. I get to 47 tracks now. Cheers Ploki.

That's almost 50% more capability.

Not much time to test a lot yet but I started with B2 reverb and at least even with Rosetta2 I can finally run at least 2X (or sometimes 3X more) than on my previous machine. Which is not the fastest with an older i7 quadcore 2.0 Ghz but this thing stays cold as ice and battery is not moving at all.
I like it.
Its funny that the iOS AUv3 apps indeed appears inside Logic as AU (but not all seems to work fine so far).
It just can get better and it is a really whole new feeling for such a small but powerful laptop which I was not able to hear the fan so far or to get it even as warm as my intel MacBook Pro just watching a you-tube video.
Do we need to Download AUv3? When I first turned on my mac mini. I thought I saw an option to download it,I did not download it.
