Yeah, but that's not a need!

Yep, that sums up my thoughts on this plugin, as well!mi-os wrote: Sun Apr 25, 2021 2:39 pmI think it's relevant to some at least. I have DIVA and i'm asking myself exactly that question. Can i make typical juno-esque bass, arp and pads sounds with DIVA which are good enough? The missing chorus is obvious, but can be remedied by third party plugins. The modules are irrelevant for people who don't have Modular. I'm not an emulation purist, so it's a valid question i think for people like me. If model 84 would be dirt cheap i would propably just get it, but that's unfortunately not the case.ramseysounds wrote: Sun Apr 25, 2021 9:50 amDiva isn't a Juno emulation, as far as I’m aware, so I don’t understand the relevance of the question?anadroid wrote: Sun Apr 25, 2021 3:37 am The question for me is, what does the Model 84 give you that Diva doesn't?
Using your logic, you can compare Model 84 to any other synth.![]()

Then you don't need to look at Softube Model 84.

Again, you're thinking in terms of emulations of specific synths, instead of thinking in terms of sounds that a VST generates. I don't agree with that perspective. When I approach a new plugin, I try it out, and see if the plugin gives me something novel, which I could use in a song, and which I'm not already getting from other VSTs. On that basis, I decide to buy it or not.chk071 wrote: Sun Apr 25, 2021 3:29 pm Then you don't need to look at Softube Model 84.I mean, if you're not interested in the Juno-106, then why look at a dedicated emulation. That doesn't make any sense.
Even if plugins emulate the same synth, they could be very different plugins. For example, M-84 probably has more in common with Diva sonically, than it does with Cherry Audio's DCO-106.

I'd say that if you'd feel a need for a very smooth and mellow sound, Model 84 would fulfill just that. Diva, much like TAL U-no LX, sounds sharper to me. Oscillator, filter and envelopes are all contributing to the difference it seems. I tried Diva with Softube's 84 chorus ( which sounds very similar to Arturia's JUN-6 chorus to me, btw. )anadroid wrote: Sun Apr 25, 2021 2:19 pm Don't think about the Model-84 in terms of what it emulates (seriously, who cares?). Think about it in terms of the sounds it generates and the needs that it serves...
So my question stands - what need does M-84 fulfill that's not already fulfilled by Diva?

I've owned Diva for a long time and I instantly bought the softtube model 84.
If I'm looking for an authentic Juno 106 sound, it's easier and quicker for me to just create it on the real thing (or as close to the real thing as one can get). Why would I open up a more complex synth that's not specifically emulating a 106 if I'm looking for a 106 sound? Sounds like a waste of time and a break in workflow when I'm working on a track.
It's like when a new effects plugin comes out and I read on forums how some people say, it's nothing special, I could recreate that effect if I use this plugin and that plugin and then put it through this third plugin etc. That's great and all, congratulations! But who has time for such garbage? Ease of use, workflow and getting the desired results quickly are more important to some people than others.
Everybody should just use whatever suits them the best and if they're happy with their tools, then great!

I disagree, I think exactly like that and I'm not doing it wrong. Maybe you are. Or maybe everybody has their own ways of doing things and who are you to judge?anadroid wrote: Sun Apr 25, 2021 3:26 pm
Yeah, but that's not a need!Ok, maybe it is for someone who's an obsessive compulsive collector of synths (and there might be one or two such people on KVR), but it shouldn't be a need for a producer. If a producer is thinking of what specific synth they need for a part instead of what sound they need for a part, they're really doing it wrong!
If I'm working on a track and it comes time to add a bass part for example, I'll have a certain bass sound in my head that I would like to get close to and then I'll instantly know which synth or synths to choose that will get me close to the sound that is in my head.

I'm not judging - no need to get so defensive. It's not my concern how anyone does things. I just think that it makes more sense to set a goal and then pick the right tool to get to that goal, instead of just picking the tool, for the sake of the tool. That's why "it's a real Juno 106 emulation" doesn't seem like a sufficient justification for a plugin.I disagree, I think exactly like that and I'm not doing it wrong. Maybe you are. Right, you're making my point for me. As you said, you're thinking first about what sound you're going for, and you pick a synth based on that. You're not putting your synth ahead of the sound. So if you can get the same sound with Diva or whatever else, why not save the $99? Because of quicker workflow? Let's talk about that.Synth Master Jedi wrote: Sun Apr 25, 2021 4:13 pm If I'm working on a track and it comes time to add a bass part for example, I'll have a certain bass sound in my head that I would like to get close to and then I'll instantly know which synth or synths to choose that will get me close to the sound that is in my head.
Because if you've got a bit of experience making patches in Diva, the difference is marginal. It's very easy to get Juno-like sounds in Diva. If you're OK with shelling out $99 for M-84 (if you buy it on sale) for what could be a marginal improvement in workflow, that's cool. Some of might not think it's worth it. I'm still trying to decide if M-84 is worth it, or if that same money is better spent elsewhere. Why would I open up a more complex synth that's not specifically emulating a 106 if I'm looking for a 106 sound? So many opinions on subjective taste stated as fact, subjective assessments of value, and implicit judgments by those who either do not like the 106 and or it’s value proposition it be case of those that do like the 106 sound.

Public service announcement; I keep seeing people mention this is $99 but there is the POLYPHONICICON coupon that brings it down to $79.

The price was $79 I think. There was a coupon.anadroid wrote: Sun Apr 25, 2021 4:28 pmI'm not judging - no need to get so defensive. It's not my concern how anyone does things. If somebody doesn't have an attachment to the real hardware or has never used or owned one before, then a real emulation of a 106 probably doesn't mean that much to them and that's understandable I suppose. I used to own a few, and that's one reason why I bought the plugin.
I bought it because I'm very familiar with the sound, the layout and because I've used it so often before.
If somebody doesn't have any connection to the 106 and they're happy with making an approximation using another synth, and they're happy with the results they get, then they probably do not need to buy the plugin.
