2021: A Year in Gear (What You've Bought or Want to Buy in 2021)

I've got my Strega and I can definitely understand why you always need another module. Of course with 1 module its quick to reach a point of knowing that if you had this sequencer or that filter, or that envelope you could get "this" and it would be amazing. Dangerous world this is.
Today I ordered a used 0-Coast after stumbling on a great price. From what I'm seeing online, it looks vendors will be restocked in June - July. I had planned on waiting, but a good price is a good price.
I've been using the stackable cables, and I understand why you'd want to switch to these only. The ones I bought as spotted earlier do sit high, and I see wobbly-ness when I add another cable. I'll definitely look at getting the Tiptop ones next time, but I'm guessing it's a small improvement over these? Either way, I'm careful. I didn't grow up with much, so I take care of what I have.
I now know I'll be looking to build out a small Eurorack this year (I think). I almost bought an Erica Synths Pico case along with a couple of Make Noise modules but admittedly it's premature because I don't enough of what's out there so I convinced myself to focus just on the Make Noise desktops for now.
Feature-wise and yes even price-wise, between all 3 desktop modules, it actually seems like a great starter set. I'll enjoy it more once I get my hands on the 0-Ctrl.
For now, I'm sequencing from the OP-Z. I found out the hard way that you can't switch the midi-channel assigned to the OP-lab module from 14. Why that is, makes no sense to me, but now I know.
I had been trying to output midi from the Op-Z to Beebo with the Plaits module while sending gate/note signals to the Strega but now I know, I should be able to get it to work next time around.

you do start off a bit like that, but you do reach a point where you become more patient between modules, as you can already do so much, and have more options to fudge ways of doing something.
but when you do only have the small kits, it's easy to want more.
it's a good sign though, it's not like you're thinking "well ive no clue how i can use this?" it's inspiring future purchases, because the want that sound!!!
between strega and the coast though, that's plenty to begin with, have lots of fun!
(jealous, granddaughters be expensive!

I honestly was a bit worried (about the no clue bit), but the most unusual part of Strega is the way it handles timing. Pitch, Delay (time), and Filter all affect each other proportionally, so it can get "wonky" quickly if you don't understand that relationship.
You can definitely tame it a bit for more predictable usage, but I see what they mean (from their demo videos) that it would ruin the need for a Strega. It's all about happy accidents via experimentation ("alchemy") and that's precisely what I wanted.
Right now for lighter (tamer) uses, I love the ring modulation on drums and then playing with the delay section.
Yeah, 0-Coast is going bring quite a few missing bits in the picture. I'm getting very excited for this combo.
Yeah man family is expensive! I've got about 2k of gear to sell off so I'm moving bits and pieces around (not splurging).

Looking at getting a mixer like a X32 with a shitload of inputs that I could use as a USB ASIO interface, but have found ASIO4ALL being more unstable than manufacturers’ ASIO drivers so ideally after something I can use as my sole interface. Problem there is I want to receive all the individual drum tracks from the USB Audio output of my TR-8S somehow so does anyone know of a mixer that accepts USB Audio or some kind of splitter box that can convert USB Audio into multiple mono outputs?
The only other option I’m considering is going from PC to Mac as it seems it handles multiple simultaneous interfaces a lot better than PC, but I wouldn’t attempt that until the M1 stuff is more mature and there are more options.

After a few minutes of muttering "holy-crap" over and over, I bought a pair of STS Serge panels from fellow at Mod Wiggler. I always wanted a Blue Funstation with TKB, even before I got my first Doepfer system, but it always seemed out of reach. Fittingly, I could never find them when I had the money.
I bought a Blue Voice and a Red CV panel and I'll get a Random*Source TKB another time. I do miss a Resonant EQ from this setup but I could always put together a R*S 4x4 system. I think I got a great deal on the set and it includes the PSU and rack ears. I just need a bunch of banana cables and a format jumbler.

Re: small systems and the compulsion to expand... I'm really glad I started with a small self-contained system and worked out from there. But at the same time, there are points when I feel like the idea behind a system is complete and trying to add more to it, won't improve it. That's why I tend to stay away from larger studio cases.

Having just started with eurorack, I'm too inexperienced to have any opinions... I have a suspicion I might end with with a number of smaller cases as individual voices, but time will tell.justin3am wrote: Mon Apr 26, 2021 8:23 pm Re: small systems and the compulsion to expand... Did you get your Beebo? If so, what’s your take?pdxindy wrote: Mon Apr 26, 2021 8:52 pmHaving just started with eurorack, I'm too inexperienced to have any opinions... I got the Beebo... once it arrived I discovered it ships without a power supply. So I ordered that and it took a bit of time and finally just showed up, but haven't had a chance to try it yet.elxsound wrote: Mon Apr 26, 2021 9:39 pmDid you get your Beebo? I am rearranging my studio right now and replacing a desk with another one I have here (sits two inches lower and matches my other desk). I figure a day or two before I test out the Beebo.

I enjoy the physical activity... it does not feel like a burden. Same like planting and caring for gardens.ghettosynth wrote: Tue Apr 27, 2021 1:36 amThe curse of hardware.pdxindy wrote: Mon Apr 26, 2021 9:51 pm I am rearranging my studio right now and replacing a desk with another one I have here (sits two inches lower and matches my other desk). I found some Himalaya Blue Poppy seeds online. Planted a while ago and finally a couple seeds germinated in the pots. This is what the flowers look like.

I ordered a Sony PCM-D100 the other day, and I'm looking forward to getting back into field recording and being far, far away from a computer for extended periods of time. Now I just have to hope my old binaural mics haven't turned to dust in the decade since I last used them.

Damn those modules look like fun. And there's a pick-up line for all the singles out there.
And that one makes me want to start gardening.

Oh well, I get that, but there's no help there for the time it takes and the time you're away from music. It's great though that you get to vacuum the rug around the rack stands and find that really cool guitar pick that you thought that you lost.pdxindy wrote: Tue Apr 27, 2021 2:26 amI enjoy the physical activity... it does not feel like a burden.
