I used to love this old free PC only plugin from back in the day! (early 2000s)
It "replaces your sound waves with simple waveforms. It distorts the sound in unusual ways, ranging from weird to horrible."
It was a joy to use to make synths a garbled mess, but (to me) very pleasing.
Does anybody remember this unique plugin?
And - the big question - is there anything comparable?
Sadly I am on a Mac nowadays and this was PC only.
Bojo Wavechanger (very old plugin) - anything similar?

No, I don't think it was anything like that unfortunately! That kind of AM effect would be easy to do - but would turn it into a more inharmonic kind of sound - this kept the sound's fundamental frequency in tact and distorted it in a very strange, smudgy, garbly sort of way.
I wonder if some sort of "resynthesis" effect could do something like it - or if there's anything in Max 4 Live or something. But I have no idea what the actual processing of the signal was!

I remember that plugin, it was fun 
If I remember right, it probably just counted zero crossings and overall amplitude, and generated a basic waveform to cover the same frequency and amplitude. So if you used it with a very steady oscillator as input it'd be boring, but with more complex audio it produces a weird sort of garbled distortion.
If that's all it was, it could be done with a Bitwig Grid patch...
...which does indeed sound pretty bonkers with the right/wrong input.

HOW INTERESTING! Thank you for that! I don't have Bitwig but you've given me a project to mess around with in Max or Reaktor
