I'm exploring the idea of collaborating with a singer. Is it the best idea to make a contract?/agreement in writing and signatures, exploring avenues of for example ownership/revenue, before commencing the project? What else do you think i need to know? What else do you think i should put in writing and signatures? Thanks.

If you are hiring a singer to perform work for you, then yes, you should present a contract for them to sign.
If you are doing a true collaborative partnership, then I would not recommend starting that relationship off with legal documents, because that sets a bad tone and you're not likely to get much that is worthwhile out of it after that.
Don't worry about it too much at this point. Very few garage bands ever wind up in court.
