Or is there another daw that is better for that sort of song making process?
Yes. Clip view in Live does it. Clips and scenes can be set to launch instantly or on the beat when triggered. Either on the next beat, or on the bar.

then there's being able to set off a pattern of clip triggering etc

Might as well add that I like being able to hit record in arrangement view and jam a stem on the keys, then highlight sections of it & using the tab button to drag the sections into clips for playing with various arrangements

... clip follow actions which can be randomized, recording your jams straight into the arrangement.

and no stopping for a scissor tool. Just highlight and move left, right, down to another audio track,up to another audio track,to a clip.I've had discussions with people that didn't get that you just highlight the area you want and drag
nearly forgot being able to drag it in to simpler, sampler, drum rack,impulse...

I know a few people who've used Live for years that never use the clip view. They just don't get it.

It's amazing, go for it! :tu:

I couldn't find single up to date tutorial that showcase quickly some neat features and workflow, key commands and approaches, which is quite the shame... here's old one from version 1, at least you can get a glimpse of some of the key commands and navigation, use Tab (toggle between Arrange and Mix window) and Shift+Tab (toggles edit window) too...

Waveform Pro, Live or Bitwig would be some I might suggest for people coming from FL, and looking for something a bit different. Still a bit of common ground though.

I also highly recommended Bitwig...it will give you a bit of everything...Logic/studio one like workflow, clip launcher, racks, modular environment etc. Also when you buy it you get one year of free updates....not quite lifetime (unless you are very unlucky!) but better than most...and the next big Bitwig update (possibly Bitwig 4) is due any time....

How is that possible with you being here since 2016?! :o

Anyway, here's a good intro to Bitwig's workflow:

And here's a rabbit-hole about Grid. You might never finish another track, but you'll die happy

FL Studio got the same... it´s called performance mode:

Post

I think 'performance mode' is very different from clips which can be used for performance, but are often used for building a linear arrangement on the fly. It feels a bit 'bolted on' as a 'me to' feature in FL Studio where as it is the raison d'être of Live and equally well implemented as a prime feature in Bitwig. I suspect Studio One will also add a 'performance mode' in a similar way, but again, it will be aimed more at Live 'performance' rather than a primary way of composing and competing a song.

Followed closely by the current anticipation for Bitwig 4 ;-)
