Many times I hear this kind of oriental instrument in the music I listen to, but never known teh name of it.

Likely it is an erhu, or a variation there of (Erhu, Jing-hu, Ba-hu, Gao-hu).

Sounds like an erhu to me too. Fretless Chinese two-stringed fiddle. Nice things.

Years ago, Creative put out a bunch of free soundfonts of Chinese instruments. You could try looking for those, but I have no idea if they are still available.

They have some CDs for sale. Wasn't terribly thrilled with the erhu in the "world instruments" one I bought.

The biggest problems with erhu / gaohu / zhonghu / etc. are that (a) their characteristic articulations depend heavily on bending pitches up and down for their sound, which means recording articulations separately since these bends often don't sound natural on sample players, and (b) the tone is so highly variable, so filled with idiosyncrasies rooted in individual players' techniques and momentary touch, that capturing the soul of the erhu in an electronic medium is terribly difficult.

I've got a half-built erhu in Tassman 3, but never did get the attack as "breathy" as I wanted it. It should be gritty and hoarse, IMO. Ah well, I'll keep at it.
