I've just been reading in Sound on Sound about the new UK download chart (run by the same people who do the Top of the Pops/Radio1 charts).

Now apparently they collate their statistics from a number of approved sites; Itunes, Napster, MyCokeMusic!, MSN, Tiscali and Woolworths... But are soon also to get their statistics from some independent sites too.. (including www.karmadownload.com )

Now I reckon between us we could come up with a hit song. And could have a lot of coverage through K-v-R to get a good amount of donwloads (99p a download). But could we make it to the top ten?...

Anyone up for trying, maybe in the new year sometime when record sales are lower?..

I was trying to find out how many donwloads we'd need but couldn't..

Might be fun trying though...

I reckon it looks like a cool way to bring down a server

And at the same time only scrape the surface of what would be needed to get into the top ten

we should put together a completely dire piece of poo as a track and just all d/l it anyway, get it to number 1 and see how long it takes to spawn a new genre complete with rip off acts.

You're thinking from bandwith suction, most likely, but I picture an alternative mechanism.

The more I think about it the More I think we could do it...

We could host the track at karmadownload.com so there would be no problem with bandwidth of any of our servers. I believe they sell tracks for 99p... but we can give all profit to charity (mate), so as to encourage more downloads

I reckon there's enough K-v-R members to get the ball rolling with the track... we can start the "buzz" here and let it spread!.. It will be like the Blair Witch Project of the music world!...

And with enough "hype" we'll get enough downloads to end up with our song on top of the pops...

... I reckon you'd need about 10,000 to get to number one...

Internet only – you would need a ‘few hundred thousand’ downloads in a ‘one week period’ imo

It would not be an issue of bandwidth – but one of connection, plus the moment this is seen as ‘bending the rules of the official charts’ it would be discounted by the uk chart authority.

That’s what I think
