Something that caught my eye.
Some kind of weird spectral/delay/whatever "smearing" device.
I've heard similar in MGranular and Mtransformer, but nothing as straightforward as this

To me, it seems like its a convolution reverb thats being fed white noise. The impulse response is the input. Will have to test this out, it sounds lovely.

This is a neat one, and worth messing with at the price.

I wonder if the name is a clue that it uses velvet noise somewhere in its implementation? However it works, it seems fairly flexible. I kind of wish there was internal feedback routing, but I can fake it in Bitwig.

Yes - it uses Velvet noise as the convolution input
It also uses a delay network.

It appears pretty unique, i've been demoing it. It's kind of a one-trick pony, but at 16$ - you can't really argue, and it's a realllyyyy neat trick

Indeed, the plugin uses velvet noise convolution. The noise concept is also extended to really low densities for random discernible repeats kind-of-thing, in addition to the reverb-ish response produced at high densities. There's no delay network though, it's purely FIR processing (except for the lo/hi filters).

UPDATE: I had inadvertently set Reaper to 128 buffer @96k which makes sense why Phonolyth would overload the CPU. When I set it to 512 or higher I get no audio dropouts.

Original post: Nice at 44.1k but at 96k it outputs grime like what a CPU over-loaded plugin sounds like. However the CPU meters are not showing any sign of over-load. 2010 macpro 12 core macPOS 10.13 Reaper 6.

Can't justify a purchase unless it works at 96k so hopeuflly something that can be fixed...

I suspect that this is not related to 96 kHz per se, but rather 2.2 times the CPU load compared to 44.1 kHz. I think those are actual buffer underruns.

The meter in Reaper scales CPU usage by the number of threads, making it less obvious to see how much a single CPU core is pushed by a single-threaded load (which a lot of audio plugins are). In the case of Xeon X5650 in your Mac Pro (6 actual cores, 12 threads with hyper-threading), if the meter is getting somewhat close to 8.33% for Velvet Machine, the core is pretty much maxed out. The lack of AVX support on the CPU also doesn't help.

Velvet Machine CPU usage depends very much on the time and density parameters. Does it get less grimy with shorter time and/or density? What is the buffer size you're using?

My mistake. I had Reaper set at 128 buffer so no wonder it as overloading the CPU. IF I set it to 512 or greater @96k it works fine. I updated my post below. Thanks!

I can run 8 instances with Microtonic as an input with only minor audio glitches @96k @512 buffer, no glitching @1024 buffer FYI
