Hi,

I will buy a new computer and Im in doubt about desktop x notebook. The advantages of notebook would be comfort (using on the sofa) and silence. However, It would be, for budget issues, much less capable than a desktop, besides the screen is small.

I would like to buy a desktop but be able to use it from my sofa. Its a 3,5mx3m room, therefore, Im on the sofa about 2,8m far from the table where I could put a monitor.

How is bluetooth keyboard, bluetooth mouse nowadays? They work fine? If the screen on the table is too far would it be feasible to put a "movable" screen on a closer mobile? What Im sort of asking is if anyone have tried a setup with a desktop but not using It sitting on a chair in front of a table, but sitting on a sofa and using bluetooth and other technology to control It. Is it feasible or desktop means using it the normal way?

Thank you

If I wouldn't sit in sweet spot with my speakers, I would rather just use laptop/notebook and sit anywhere I please.

How much are you willing to spend?

Im not a professional mixer, in fact my room is not treated and once I stopped using phones for treating tinnitus I dont do serious attempts of mixing any more. I'm mostly a composer and also use the computer for many other stuff, but the position in relation to the speakers wouldnt be relevant. However, I do need to see the screen well and handle much information on It, and in this sense a small screen of a laptop could be an issue.

Hardware is very expensive here, cause everything is taxed high, Im planning to buy a desktop with a nice Amd Ryzen 6 or something, and I know a laptop would have to be much worse. However, I really dont like to be on a chair in front of a desk, I do It to play keys, but I would prefer to be on the sofa all other time while not playing.

It's one of those things you need to decide for yourself, do you feel more comfortable with smaller screen few ticks from you or looking into something (guess much bigger) from sofa distance.

Actually Ryzen laptops are quite powerful, there's no such thing as Ryzen 6, how much are you willing to spend?

I pretend to look in sites like cpubenchmark the best cpu I can buy for a good price. Right now I think on buying a desktop with Ryzen 5 3600x, because cpu benchmark site
gives a 18328 grade for it, once my present laptop cpu is rated in about 3000 on the same site, I suppose this would be a great improvement. In us dollars the cost of this desktop is of $700, or $500 in brittish pounds. If I were to buy a laptop it would be of the same budget.

My doubts are about being able to use it on the sofa(I never used bluetooth keyboard ir mouse before) and the amount of silence that silent-desktop-cases can really offer.
A laptop would be silent and used fine in the sofa, but I think I would be unable to work with orchestra music and even normal music might be slow with this budget.

IMO, if you don't plan to sit on a desk, in an office chair, forget about desktop. I don't know how it is for you, but, I'd absolutely hate sitting on a sofa with a mouse and a desktop.

That said, I'd take a desktop and sitting on an office chair at a desk over sitting on a sofa with a laptop every day. I have both a desktop and a laptop, and, I use the desktop 99% of time. Only use the laptop when I'm sitting in front of the TV, or in bed. Desktop has - more power; bigger screen; better ergonomics (keyboard and mouse); better accessibility with more ports, USB ports etc. Laptop, for me, is rather something I would make much use of when I would be "away from the office". Which I'm not, usually. :)

Desktop PC can be as silent as laptop, if the distance from your sofa and screen isn't bothering you, guess you should be good with bluetooth peripherals, maybe get one of those keyboards with touchpad or maybe trackball mouse, again it's you who need to decide what suits you the most.

Let's put things in that perspective, Ryzen laptop that cost around 700 and uses Ryzen 7 4700U have score ~14 000, for example

Can you provide link for the desktop Ryzen 5 3600x build that cost 700 bucks with peripherals?

I like to be on the sofa using a wheeled office chair I have as a feet bench. I even think of improvise some movable mobile to support a screen so its closer to the sofa, but not sure if its feasible or im thinking too far.

You found a quite good option of laptop, 14000 rate seems good. Its $950 us dollars here, a bit out of my budget. If I import it I risk paying 70% more on taxes. But I dont know, when I think on buying an expensive laptop I feel it as a bit fragile thing. Not that it makes sense, but I feel that a desktop is more robust, more "safe" to handle my computeering needs. Though I would dislike it to be noisy cause its a small room and It already has the noise of air conditioning, but If a desktop can be as silent as a laptop thats a great step ahead, are the desktop cases responsible for it or it needs a specific configuration? I mean, this Amd ryzen 5 3800x with a good desktop case could be silent? Im asking because my old desktop is very noisy.

You will need to pay for decent cooling and I don't think it's quite possible for 700 bucks incl. peripherals, I have a feeling everything is much more expensive there and decent build will go over 700 bucks without peripherals, you need great PSU, at least 16GB of RAM, big enough SSD to store all your stuff, it all ads up...

if you are from India by any chance, maybe look into this thread or get in contact with Sidhu

I pretend to improve it with time, and thats another advantage with the desktop option. Im looking for the best cpu, for adding ssd, ram and etc later. As soon as I buy the "starting point" I pretend to improve it a bit each time.

India is a marvellous place, but Im actually from south america, Brazil.

Best value CPU is Ryzen 5 3600, not 3600X, you will not gain much with 3600X for 100 bucks more, so here's one way you can save up, also you will need good and silent CPU cooler(viewtopic.php?p=8099258#p8099258), if you are doing orchestral music, you can't go lower than 16GB of RAM as starting point, best budget board and cheapest is MSI Tomahawk MAX, for decent and cheap SSD look into Kingston A400 series, you will need silent graphic card, I don't know how much does one cost, don't use one myself, you will need good power supply, don't cheap out on that, Seasonic have good stuff, buy big enough case, no need to spend fortune, MS Industrial Winston is nice and cheap one, good luck.

Its being difficult to find the ryzen 5 3600 in an already made computer, Im finding only the 3600x... In this case, is this the second best option or is there other amd or Intel on competition with the 3600x?

I believe I'll probably have to buy a not ideal computer and later upgrade It a bit, and this not cause of the budget but because of the availability. Is a cooler something that can be changed later with some ease? The ones I find have not good ones, and being silent is a must.

I recommend you find a laptop that's more square. They're harder to drop. The rounded ones always feel so fragile. It doesn't have to be entirely square but not too round, they're easier to put on your lap etc.

I haven't had a desktop for 6 yrs. My MBP is at least an order of magitude more capable than it was. It was an 8-core 24GB RAM machine.
I mean it sounds like you want a laptop. Doing desktop with a mouse on a sofa does not seem ergonomically too good, but I've done a whole lot of music from bed..

In my opinion, off the shelf builds some stores are selling are waste of money, they cheap out on everything, ofc you can change everything and spend more money afterwards, but hey...
