A performance that includes Allan Zavod who I just found out passed away almost five years ago.
Allan Zavod OAM (16 October 1945 – 29 November 2016) was an Australian pianist, composer, jazz musician and occasional conductor whose career was mainly in America.

I saw them on that same tour in Seattle from the 8th row in the Paramount. The sound in that smaller hall was perfect and the band was excellent. 8)

Zavod did yeoman work that tour.
The audition is a funny story, Frank made him come out from Arizona IMMEDIATELY

w. Archie Shepp during that tour

Great, I like the work of the rhythm section and keys, especially.

There seems to be quite a few musicians with somewhat interesting stories regarding how they joined the band. That performance also included Scott Thunes on bass who hailed from San Anselmo just north of here:

I am in the 7th seat of the 25th row of this show.
Can you hear the sound bounce off my happy forehead?

I thought Dweezil did a great homage to his dad with “Zappa Plays Zappa”.
Apparently his sibling didn't agree...

"The Zappa Trust imposed restrictions on Dweezil’s own long-running touring tribute, Zappa Plays Zappa. Under the grounds that the name “Zappa Plays Zappa” was owned by the Zappa Family Trust, Dweezil was informed that he was no longer allowed to tour under that banner and risked enormous copyright infringement penalties each time he played a song without proper permission."

Rock on Dweezil...

I was at the London show in 2006. Steve Vai joined the band for about 45 minutes. That was probably the best gig I have ever been to. The 2006 band were special.

Yea, I love that tune.
There is a certain intoxication in some of Zappas music which is a result of his deep love for music.
You can see this in his band members, his audience and himself.

I didn't expect the "Zappa Plays Zappa" band would be able to emulate that, but they did so perfectly, at times, it seemed that Frank was still here.

the Zappas were a divided family long before Dweezil mounted a tribute band. Ahmet was being a control freak. AND it isn't just that they created a bullshit trademark claim, DZ was allowed none of the merchandising lucre.
The Alex Winter film ZAPPA appears to have required leaving DZ the f**k out of the picture completely in order to secure the level of cooperation with Ahmet, and of Gail before him to get all that stuff together.

FTR I don't like gossip, but this is a crying shame.

the camera work in that one video is incredible. that took serious rehearsals to pull off
