Just stumbled across some refurb Dells that seem cheaper than I expected. Same model but with either a Ryzen 5 4500U or i5-1135G7 for around the same price.
Benchmarks broadly comparable (~11000 v 10000 bench mark, ~2400 v 2700 single thread) So, about 4 times my current 3rd gen i5, 50% better single thread. I'm a bit out of the loop with processors but either should be a decent upgrade I assume? AMD is six core (i5 four), is that still a better option for audio? Using Reaper if that makes a difference (alleged better multi thread handling).

People underestimate how much graphical consumption is happening in a daw. The more you have the better.
Though I'll say - 17's were a bit disappointing, and their ability to render text in graphical programs seem hindered which was the strangest of realizations. This tells me that the same will be found in the 15, but maybe not the I3.
I've been trying to be kind to the amd processors, but they're a little.. picky. Stable, just.. I dunno. They don't power through everything like the old intel core 2's. Perhaps the older amd phenom ii's will.
I look forward to My used hexacore high voltage mobo on its way with an old phenom ii. I'll let you know how it turns out. Though apparently hexacore was the underpinning that led to the ryzen chip - the older 6 core amd phenom ii's are quoted as the fastest for the am3 socket type. Maybe I question that though in light of the hexacore providing far more stable voltage with a cooled power rig furthermore.
If I could find the newer 2012 six core with 3.6, that would overclock sweet - assuming the fsb was over 2600.

Take a look at the 9590 at the bottom for instance; It gives you an idea of what the older fx series could do, I might add that LTT proved that the noctua two fan cooler actually surpasses water cooling and is quieter:

Tbh, I think they're the king of laptops. But I'd rather have an older fx chip with a good gpu on a desktop.

I'm pretty set on a laptop (portability etc) so will go that route but interesting to read about the older AMDs still kicking it.

When looking at benchmarks, especially for thin laptops, always check the benchmark results over time. Some laptops start throttling so hard after the first run of the test, so much that the score of the first test has very little to do with the actual performance.
