Astonishing guitar IMO. Not cheap either...

Here is a pic of the converted Thomann Flightcase Eurorack Rig. The case is $99 rather than $80 it seems. Looks like it's changed a little since then as well.

It would cost some money beyond that of course, but you can get the rails cheap off etsy
and probably the ears as well. A couple uzeus or whatever and you're good to go.

whyterabbyt wrote: Fri May 21, 2021 2:49 pm I wanted to be in this thread again, because peer pressure. So I bought some Tesseract stuff. Sweet Sixteen Mk2 with gate expander, and their dual logic module. Wound up cheaper than kit equivalents (Befaco VCMC, Frequency Central Logic Bomb) that I'd been mulling over for ages.
well, that certainly snowballed for me.

Putting the Sweet Sixteen next to the Disting EX would have taken me over the power available in that 9U Doepfer case. But I knew that was coming so a while back I bought a PSU3 to upgrade the case (with the PSU2 to replace a PSU1 in my very first Doepfer 6U case).

So that meant emptying the 9U rack, and the 6U case.
And then emptying a row of the other 9U rack for reference so I could see how its PSU3 was hooked up.
And then discovering I'd emptied the wrong bloody 6U case, so emptied the right one.
And then I pulled all the rest of the digital stuff, so that I could basically put it all in the two 9U cases.
Then documented all the PSU2 and PSU3 cabling, and surfed for the original Doepfer wiring diagrams.
And -then- I finally got around to removing the PSU2 from the 9U case, which, thankfully was easy. Left the busboard power cables connected to the busboards.

Took a break to plastidip some busboard cables in grey for the 5V lines, because leaving them red/black/blue wouldve been a bit confusing. Plastidip fumes = headache.

Took a break.

Found a random jumper block inside the case. WTF? Was it off a module? Which bloody module?

Putting the PSU3 in not quite so easy. Bloody awkward in fact. Considerable back strain in the process of trying to align it from the front and screw in via the back. Metal 'shield' connected to the ground cable didnt help.
Did I mention the Doepfer wiring diagrams are actually upside down with respect to the actual layout in a case?
Then realised the existing 12V/GND/-12V busboard cables were all in front of the new PSU3 instead of neatly tucked underneath.
Unscrewing the PSU3 enough to tidy up the busboard cables, then refixing was even more bloody awkward and sore than the first time because my back was already stressed.
Doing it all over again because that ground wire which was connected to the shield got pulled out from under the PSU because of the weight of the shield, even more awkward and sore.

Reconsulted all the documentation before reconnecting the busboards. Turns out, the slow-blow fuse needed in the power connector for using a PSU3 is different (800mA) from that for a PSU2 (400mA). Eventually found some that weren't £7 for one single fuse, FFS, and that I could actually get delivered this week. Sigh.

Identified where that jumper came from. Turns out there are two on each of the busboards, but my eyesight isnt good enough to have noticed. Replaced.

Started looking at the PSU2 power supply in the case I'd cleared accidently. Didnt match my notes. Checked the Doepfer. Nope, doesnt match that either.
Cleared a row each out of two more 6U cases so I can check. They do match.
Looks like one of my Doepfer cases has the power connector connected up the opposite way round from the Doepfer notes and all the other cases. Is that an issue? Seems weird.
Gave up for the evening.

TLDR = I pulled about half my fitted modules yesterday and they're all still sat in a pile. :bang: :bang: :idiot:

Secondhand prices are pretty low for a lot of the moulded rack cases. I picked up one of these for £25 last year (better than the new asking price of £339)

I sold my old 16u SKB shock mount for less than £100. The quality of the Gator is nowhere near as good as the SKB but it's no big deal now as I don't play out any more. They are bargains if they're what you can use.

yeah, pretty frustrating.

still, we're talking about power supplies; I'd rather go slowly and be frustrated than rush and f**k up 3 rows of fancy digital modules. Or me.

for sure!
one reason i opted for mantis, no messing about, but obviously not as "upgradable" or anything, it is what it is.

the diy when we are plugging shit in! no thanks, im a complete idiot, ill stick to battery projects there! :scared:

it's the ache and pains it brings that worry me too, lots of bending over in bad neck positions

at least it will be fun when you're done :tu:

You haven't lived unless you've grabbed a plate cap at least once!

ive had plenty of shocks when younger don't worry

I went ahead with that Pico BBD after all. It's not the Doepfer with its wild possibilities, but it's still unfiltered and noisy and I can spare 3HP for it ;) Also a tin of 50 more Knurlies so I can go ahead and replace all the screws with them (I needed 128).

Hmm, this isn't a great endorsement of the Doepfer supply kits! I found the KonstantLab BoardPWR system very simple to install, but it's a different style I guess.

Don't be too hard on yourself. I've certainly been there. When I shipped my DIY synth to Donavan, the Power-One PSU inside the case came loose and sheared off a circuit board or two.
Half of my modules are in boxes at the moment. Waiting for their new home.
