Hi, Echoes in the Attic! We have changed this recently, actually. Previously, the authentication process would check every seven days, it has been changed to check once a month. An internet connection is only required to authenticate instruments once every 30 days currently. Thanks! 😊

That's great, definitely better. But I would still request a permanent activation. That is what most of my licenses are and I've had issues with the Roland license server and I don't really feel like taking chances on things I own not being available to me. So I think the right thing to do is allow permanent activation for lifetime licenses so I'm not at risk of my licenses being deactivated because a phone home didn't work one day. I really don't want to be at the mercy of your servers. So once a month still isn't enough to make me buy more licenses. Thanks.

I doubt they’re going to change now, it’s becoming more normal and for obvious reasons is seen as a way to protect their income.

How does it do that? From my perspective it is reducing their income, as I would have contributed to that income without the periodic connections needed.

Not going to reply as it involves a subject we aren’t supposed to discuss on the forum and I don’t want to walk down that gangplank.

Hey, Echoes in the Attic! This authorization structure prevents piracy. Periodic checking of licenses is normal in most cases to make sure the same program isn't being used by or shared to multiple users. We've had permanent authorization request before, but we do require some form of piracy prevention to be to keep producing new instruments and content, and permanent authorization is unlikely. We do offer Lifetime Keys for those that would like a single purchase license option, as opposed to a monthly or annual membership. For more info on Lifetime Keys, follow this link, scroll down and click on Lifetime Keys. Thanks!

Hi, Jeezo! Great questions. If your instruments need authorization, simply connect to the internet, and open Roland Cloud Manager. That will authorize everything all at once, and you'll be good for 30 days. Roland Cloud Manager always has new content and updates for your favorite instruments, but it doesn't need to be running in the background all the time. There is a menu in the lower left corner of Roland Cloud Manager that allows you to toggle the Run on Startup and Auto-update My Instruments options.

Our EDU program is rolling out to a few schools currently. If you would like to see Roland Cloud EDU in your school, let them know, we'd be glad to work with them. Some schools have Roland Cloud EDU built into tuition and some offer a student discount, so please consult your instructor for pricing information. Thanks! :)

Brian I know this has been argued to death already but the lifetime keys aren’t any different than the sub. Other companies are not doing the same thing (Arturia nor NI do, its a one-time thing unless you wipe the software from the machine). ILok is probably the closest but even in that case I’m not sure that’s how it works. I just don’t buy the piracy argument but we’re not supposed to talk about that here so I won’t discuss further.

That said I appreciate the update to 30 days instead of 7. For those of us who don’t mind the check thats a significantly better amount of time. You guys keep adding content which is awesome. Just wish you’d get some more ACB stuff out there that isn’t related to work already done (ie: the stuff that came out for System-1/System-8 or the boutiques). JX-8P, Jupiter-6 would be awesome but honestly not going to hold my breath ;)

Count me as the second one that would have contributed, there are enough reasonable ways to protect software. I even prefer an usb dongle over any form of online copy protection when it's not iLok.

Music software as a service is nothing I'm interested in and I'm more and more picky with accepting complicated and online activation systems. One of the reasons I mainly buy from smaller developers these days.

Glad I stumbled upon these details. Now I can understand where I'm getting fixed authorization errors from. I almost did end up buying more stuff from the cloud but luckily have read this on the right time. Thankfully there's more and more alternatives on the market. I love Roland sound though.

BTW, please could somebody help me solve the problem with uninstalling Zenology plugin: I'm on v1.50 but when I try to uninstall it from the cloud manager, I get this message:
The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.

Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'PluginSetup.msi' in the box below:

C:\ProgramData\Package Cache\{some-letters-and-numbers-here}v1.50\
I don't use any network resources to my little knowledge. Thx

I know how it works thanks, I am a former subscriber. This is the system I have an issue with.
I would just point out that every other music software that I own does not require a monthly server check. So perhaps Roland could do a little research to determine how all the other software devs manage to do permanent authroization?

Or don't. I'm just saying that you are losing business because of this. And I know many others feel the same way.

I'm one of those that Roland has lost with one scheme after another over the years. According to Brian apparently, there are "more pirates than potential customers".

But this last quote from him gets me to ask him to clarify if the "Lifetime Key(s)" do or do not have to do these periodic checks?
I understand if it checks once during the install. But I already have enough Roland lifetime keys from their previous schemes that require authentication from an abandoned venture of theirs. So is Lifetime, Lifetime? Or a lifetime of periodic checks until they get another idea they like better?
