Rift - A New Type Of Distortion Is Here

After looking at the overview vid, I'm impressed how deep its functionality goes. Really well thought out. Price is too steep for me and NFR license makes it more unattractive, but any company has their prerogative to position themselves in the market as they wish! They don't owe us anything. Looking forward to see what else they come up with regardless.

+1. I'm really not stingy at all when it comes to distortion plugins (I reckon I have most of the available ones...) but seeing my plugin folder being oversaturated (ha!) already, I'll only add distortion plugins that are either within the impulse purchase price range ($49-59) or are resellable.nonstatic wrote: Fri May 28, 2021 9:09 am Price is too steep for me and NFR license makes it more unattractive
More power to the dev as this one looks nice, but I'll have to pass/wait til black friday.
(I also think that dev isn't doing himself a favour not offering a demo for a plug that will be sitting firmly in the premium price range and isn't resellable - for $49, again, I'd probably just buy it... but it's a free market and I wish everyone the best of success)

Looks like Minimal Audio was added to the Audio Flatulence NFR list at the bottom of their site http://audioflatulence.com/

I feel we are perhaps getting a bit over the top about the company/conditions. Rift is expensive but no more so than lots of other plugins and it is clear they have really thought a lot about making a usable instrument - probably more so than most other companies do.
Lots of other companies have terrible licensing terms that make resale unattractive even if possible. And the refund rather than demo thing is not as bad as many others as well eg - sample companies are often outrageously restrictive to the point of looking like they have an inflated sense of entitlement.
I think one of the problems Rift is seeing is that the product really looks fantastic - I would love to have it and I think lots of others are thinking the same way too. But the terms are a bit shit- no denying that the combo of expensive and restricted terms is just really disappointing. So there is a frustration that would not be there is Rift was just blah.
$79 with a small transfer fee and and I'd buy it $50 and NFR and I'd buy it. At the moment almost certainly not, especially given that if I do Trash 3 will come out with great modulation and a new interface

To put it simply, we don't think it is too much for the feature set and sound that it offers. We've worked on and used comparable pieces of software that are in that price range or higher. I totally understand if it's too much for some people, but that's what we think Rift is worth.LeVzi wrote: Fri May 28, 2021 5:53 amIt does look a very interesting plugin but you seem to be avoiding the points people have made, $75 is simply a very high price for a new plugin, and when that offer ends its going to $129 , which is absurd tbh. And now it appears you are selling a NFR plugin, that's going to put so many people off. Maybe you need to revise your pricing and license transfer policy.Minimal Audio wrote: Thu May 27, 2021 6:08 pmHey, thanks for checking it out!Dirtgrain wrote: Wed May 26, 2021 11:54 pm Well, people often wish for Trash 2 to be updated. If it had morphing and modulation options like Rift, that would be great. But Trash 3 does not seem to be on the radar. And now Rift has come along with some nice features. I'll keep checking out videos--I really want to determine if I would appreciate its features over what I have now (Shaperbox, Shade and a lot of saturation and distortion plugins).
We'll be posting more videos that explore the features in the coming weeks![]()
Just off the top of my head, a few things that I think sets Rift apart are the "musical" tuning effects, MIDI tracking, custom distortion + filter types, and the randomization features.
If you have any questions, let me know!
Best,
Ben from Minimal Audio
We are looking into adding license transfers but it would require some backend development, so we obviously cannot tell people that we offer it right now.

I don't think anything bad is happening here: people post about their purchase descisions all the time. We had some people buy it and explain why and some people not buy it and explain why. It's all good feedback. There are many aspects to a software product and so there are many different combinations of importance to people. No need to espouce the virtues of Rift, Rift won't care, Rift is not a person.

Hey, apologies for this short answer. I'm glad you're enjoying it!OzoneJunkie wrote: Fri May 28, 2021 12:42 am Ok, I'm taking a chance - I bought Rift, and will be trying out. Just FYI, the FAQ says that refunds take 2 to 4 weeks to process, so, that's another "do not like" checkbox.
Also, after you activate the plugin, if you click on the person/account icon, it shows your info, and has a "Log Out" button. Clicking that appears to be essentially the same thing as deactivating the plugin. So, if you click that, in order to use the plugin you have to log in again. However, once logged in/activated again, it does not appear to need an internet connection.
I'd like some clarification from Minimal Audio here - what is the function of the "Log out" button - to deactivate? Anything else we need to know about that? If that's the function of the Log Out button, perhaps it should be labeled "deactivate"... I don't know... but with the label "Log out" and the fact that the plugin then becomes disabled, it's sort of misleading.
Personally, I'm not a fan of C/R copy protection - always preferring a serial number system. But I'll put up with C/R if the plugin is worth it. To note, I personally do not buy software that requires physical dongles, or protection methods like Code Meter - just my personal preference.
I'll play this weekend with Rift, and decide if I'm keeping. So far, initial noodling - I like it a lot. And for $75, NFR doesn't bother me personally, but I can see how it would for others. At full price of $129, NFR 'tastes' different tho... so I would be hesitant there.
We'll see....
The "Log Out" button does what you describe and deactivates the plugin so that you can activate it on another computer (we offer two activations per purchase). It doesn't do anything else.
I agree that "Deactivate" would make more sense! Thanks for the feedback.

Thanks, I appreciate the reply. I had some concern that the plugin might be doing a periodic license check, and therefore needed to stay logged in. That's one thing that I always try to avoid - situations where a plugin might become deactivated due to a periodic check. I understand that some plugins do such things, and that's some companies' prerogative to structure that way. But for me, I'm trying to only buy software that allows me to open very old projects (years from now), without having to worry about such things (assuming I'm still on the same machine and I didn't purposely deactivate things). I know it's a touchy subject sometimes, but I don't like the idea of having music projects I will try to open in the future, that are dependent on a company existing years from now. Companies and software come and go, and I make an effort to buy things that avoid those dependencies.Minimal Audio wrote: Fri May 28, 2021 10:47 pmHey, apologies for this short answer. Having said that - I've played with Rift enough now to know that I'm keeping it - not only that - I think it's great - exactly perfect for the type of stuff I like to do. So, cheers for an awesome plugin!

I have always seemed fun this expression. In the context of any discussion containing criticism. As if someone intended make some legal claims by just sharing opinions.
