Studio One and USB MIDI controllers on Windows

I am running Studio One 5 on Windows 10. If I start up Studio One before my USB MIDI controller has been connected, then I am unable to use the USB MIDI controller in Studio One, until I restart Studio One while the USB MIDI controller is still connected. I have followed the procedure of clicking the "Reconnect..." button on the MIDI Monitor window and then reconnecting the USB MIDI device but to no avail; Studio One still would not see the re-connected USB MIDI controller.

I resigned myself to accepting this restart ritual as a consequence of starting up Studio One without the USB MIDI controller already connected to the PC, but today I finally decided to reach out to my fellow Studio One users on KVR to find out if this truly is just a quirk of Studio One on Windows.

Its one of those little annoyances that drives you nuts.

The best solution I have come up with is to untick the little box on the "options\ExternalDevices page at the bottom. It says "notify me if devices are unavailable when studio one starts". With that item unticked you will not see the notification to reconnect. On my machine when i switch on my USB device it now just connects without any user intervention.

Works for me when I reconnect my MIDI keyboard with the reconnect dialog in the controller settings in the options menu.

I would plug the MIDI controllers in before I start Studio One though. I always do. Why would you not do that?

Thanks for the tip!

Thanks for confirming that Studio One's MIDI re-connection feature does work for you with your USB MIDI controller in Windows 10.

I did some more testing and it does not get recognized after startup of other software I have installed which support a re-scan of available MIDI input devices (e.g. Cakewalk, RapidComposer, etc.). I wonder if it my brand and model of USB MIDI controller. I have tested the USB MIDI controller with the manufacturer's Windows 10 driver installed and also without the driver installed (i.e. using it as a USB class compliant device).

My PC is a "desktop replacement" notebook, so I do not leave peripherals connected to it (since I am always schlepping it from place to place). Unfortunately, I sometimes forget to connect my MIDI devices before I start up my MIDI software.

It should work anyway.

I have a Novation Impulse 49 keyboard, if that is of interest and help to you.

I just bought the Impulse 61 a couple of days ago since a local shop was selling it off really cheap and I was wanting a midi/keyboard to throw around since I own a Nektar and the NI S49 which I love and would hate to break.

Anyway, just tested connecting all the keyboards after launching Studio One 5 and opened up a song and they connect if you click Studio One/options/external devices/Reconnect.
