I wouldn't use either of them... both are way too slow and take too much mental focus.

The Bitwig browser pops up, I type the first 2-3 letters of whatever plugin I want and hit down arrow and return... already done before I would even visually recognize a few VST thumbnails, let alone drag one into the project or have to scroll.

How does the Bitwig browser "pop up"?

Trust me, it isn't. Unless you're the kinda guy that likes to read a paragraph before making a selection. Or (god forbid) reads manuals before using the software. ;)

That said, Presonus should add a search field to the plugin browser. You guys convinced me that it's a useful feature.
I'm not comparison shopping, looking at tins to see what's inside them. I already know what I want and just need to pick it from the list.

But, yes, I do read all the manuals, before even deciding what to purchase, hardware and software! How did you know?
I started on Logic 5 with a PowerBook G4 550Mhz. I now have a MacBook Air M1 and it's ~165x faster! So, why is my music not proportionally better? :(

Well, I'm stupid. Actually Studio One supports pressing keys in the plugin browser to find the plugin. It just doesn't have a search box, but, typing the plugin works. Hidden, but, it's there.

The plugin browser has to have the focus though, of course, otherwise you'll end up pressing general shortcut keys.

Again, I can see how a search function would be useful for the selection as well, if you happen to have a gazillion of plugins. Would be cool if Presonus added that to Studio One as well.
This is exactly why I've never bothered looking into Studio One. A search function is absolutely the fastest, and if you have more than 10 VSTs, pics are going to require scrolling, so the list would be quicker. I really do not get why this is seen as a feature? If it was for collections of VSTs I get it, pics can be quicker if there are 10-20 of them, but beyond that they make scrolling a thing.

I think there's a bit of a misconception about this feature: It's not about seeing funny little pic-ies of your plugin collection, it's about a more clear selection of your plugins.

Take a look at these screenshots, and tell me what's the quicker way, visually, to select the plugin you want to add to a track:

i find it easier in any host, by not owning so many.
has done me well all these years.

hmmm, reaktor or absynth? done!

ok, it gets more complicated once reaktor is open, then theres a couple of hundred choices :o

You mean like in Studio One? Taking snapshots for your plugins? Oh man! This is silly! I even disabled it! It makes scrolling a burden every time you want to insert a plugin. I usually just write the first letter in the search. The only thing it's useful for, if you can't read :hihi:
Using: Cubase Pro 15, Reason 13, Tascam US-4x4HR, MODX6, DM12D, LaunchKey 49, Yamaha guitar(Pacifica 612v) and bass (BB234) and some virtual instruments and synths.

Read the post before yours. It does have it. I simply didn't know it does.

Think about your initial argument, that's what I'm responding to. You initially thought it didn't have a search function and were trying to say that images are better. This is far from my truth, you may like it, but images to me are far inferior.

Post

No, I prety much said from the beginning that the search function has its uses as well.

With the few favorites I have, it's still way faster to select with the mouse, using pictures, than it is to click in the plugin browser, switch to keyboard, and type in the first few characters of the plugin. If you happen to have and use loads of plugins, the search is surely faster.

You were talking about images, that's what I'm responding to, this is classic deflection and it's annoying. I don't care about whether or not Studio One has a search function or whether or not you said it would be cool if Studio One had one, that's not at all what I'm questioning or trying to engage you about. I see no real use to having images for the 200+ plug ins I own, and I think it's vastly inferior to any other way to sort through your plug ins. I have zero interest in Studio One, this is a Bitwig sub forum and we're talking about whether Bitwig should have images for plug ins.

I do not like images for plugins either - search functionis best for me. Reaper has the best system of the DAWs I own. Studio One does not keep a persistent search bar open, which is crazy. Bitwig's is ok too, but the global organisaion is not as good as Reaper's (might just be familiarity but I like things like a "New" category)

I just stick my Most Used stuff in a small set of Collections and grab from there as needed, always via the pop-up browser. I don't like having to type to find something, so search is not my preferred method. Pictures, meh, whatever. S1 does, though, have a great browser. Bitwig's is fine, it gets the job done. Sometimes I think it looks a bit noisy / shows a bunch of sorting columns I don't really give a crap about. But Collections work smoothly enough, so I just load those up and access everything from there.

Then hide the columns...

Oh sweet! I honestly never realized that was possible. Saw this and checked, sure enough a right-click presents nodes for every column to be turned on / off -- radness. Thx! (I'm still mostly a Live user but also enjoy having BWS, but as a result I'm not thoroughly versed in all of its configurability. this is def a welcome tweak to know).
