Incrementally add drum sounds to loop?

How can I record loops and incrementally add drums?

For example, I used to use a Yamaha RX-8 hardware drum machine. I could tell it to start recording say, a 4/4 measure/pattern. I could hit a pad for the kick drum, wait until it looped around, hit a pad for a snare (while hearing the kick), on the next loop maybe a high hat (while hearing the cumulative drum sounds) etc.

This has to be easy right?

Also if possible I would like to be able to keep some drums on separate tracks.

I would prefer to do this in FL Studio if it can be done. Second choice would be Cubase SX. Or whatever will work.

I'm using a Radium 61 for input.

Thanks!

FL5 is supposed to be out soon. The feature you are describing is loop recording. There is supposed to be a simple implementation of this in the new version.

I'd be interested to know if other VSTi plugins like EnergyXT can do this...

The ease with which Ableton Live makes this possible is one of the major reasons I got it.
If it sounds good it is good.

Trivially easy in Sonar too.

Alternatively, sample each sound, make a quick patch in one of the freeware samplers, and use a MIDI step-sequencer to do it.

thanks all for the feedback. I will be looking forward to FL Studio 5.

I've never even tried Sonar.

As for Live, I've gone through the tutorials that are included with the software, but I've not tried anything beyond that.

Can someone point me in the right direction for accomplishing this incremental recording in Live?

Gee, we kinda think alike 'eh? Lots and lots of hosts, don't know how to use them... hmmm.. must be nice to be rich. ;)

Yes, being wealthy enough to use an app for a while and just get a new one if it doesn't suit you would be sweet. :(

Nice work if you can get it! ;)

*ahem* just for the record, this is amazingly easy to do in Cubase SX as well. :hihi:

Hmm... Well I'll ignore the "many hosts" comments. I have had the opportunity to try out a few hosts, but I've mostly been using FL Studio, except for occasionally recording some acoustic piano or electric guitar with Cubase.

I'm thinking Live is pretty cool, but it's hard to read the fonts. Guess I need to learn it well enough that I don't need to read the text anymore.

Thanks for the helpful posts.

How would this be done in Cubase? I'm wondering also about how easy it would be to make some loops like this in Live and then move them to Cubase and/or FL Studio.

Go ahead, but I doubt the others will ignore it. ;)
