Anyway it's getting frankly annoying how much this thread has become about a single feature request. Seems like every announcement of an upgrade gets bogged down with this on every forum everywhere.

Yeah... any attempt to talk about the actual update is swamped by feature requests for stuff that isn't there.

I am listening to a very simple patch as I type. 1 very short midi clip (16th note long) with 1 note. Using the new pitch spread function, the midi note pitch is randomized across 2 octaves. That is going to a Grid patch with a pitch quantizer set to a scale. The velocity is also randomized and a bit of chance on whether the note is triggered.

I mean it's a thread about a product that people may be interested in. If they are looking at the features and it doesn't have something they think is important I don't see why it can't be discussed. If people don't want the thread bogged down, then don't respond. It's that simple. I mean all the complaining and the people doing the complaining are the ones responding the most furthering the echo chamber.

Even so when you drag in a VST instrument you don't get a screenshot of it in the track header. You only get that with RE, and built in devices. The only thing you see in the track header is the plugin container.

I don't use VSTs in Reason

As I said, it's nothing crucial or urgent, but since it is available in Reason I enjoy it a lot.
I manage in a different way - by colouring & grouping tracks - in Bitwig or other DAWs.

With Studio One 4.5 and up you can actually show 50 plugin thumbnails of instruments at any one time at standard 1080P resolution. Just a matter of dragging the window across and dragging them to the left arrangement area to open. It's easy to manage them with ones you want to hide or use. I mean if Bitwig was ableto do this, then Bigwig would be more inviting and modern.

That is a terrible workflow! Bitwig is already 20x better/faster than that! I could have any plugin on a track before my eyes could even track a portion of that page.

I have to agree here. Bitwig is really quick to add devices. I can just start typing the name of the effect/instrument I want and it pops up really quickly.

But also, you can create your own custom folders and list just what you want in a folder, which is also a really quick way to speed up creative choice, just takes a little bit of time to configure how you want it. I find it great for things like delays, reverb, modulators where I want to see a shortish list and not list the built in ones.

‘FL Studio type piano roll editing’ was one of the highest requested features for Bitwig! I get people don’t like the pattern based workflow, but the step and piano roll midi editing and full audio editing (with pitch and time correction etc.) are far superior to what Bitwig currently offers, I look forward to seeing how Bitwig handles this in the future...you can’t get it wrong if you don’t offer the features!

Go to agree with this. Bitwig has a pretty limited piano roll and no 'step' sequencer. Seem like quite easy wins to me.

The modulators look fun, but nothing beats actual better control of what's been played/programmed than good piano roll/grid edit controls.

A dedicated Step Sequencer would still be useful in Bitwig... but with the new Operators and Expression randomization, Bitwig clips are much closer to the capability of a Step Sequencer.

It's always a bit funny to me when people link step sequencers with advanced capabilities like randomisation or similar. Before aaaall else, the feature of step sequencers is their ease of use and visual simplicity.

But yeah, the new capabilities are practically begging for being put to use in a nice step sequencer editor view.

I think the operators are great and are a move towards a better midi capability. I just hope they also put a little focus on really more basic midi functions as well. I think things like repeats are fun - but random notes isn't really something I think I need.

I do think a good step sequencer also needs a good groove functionality - which is something I'm hoping they will be bringing. (per clip groove)

Glad to be entertaining

I don't find Step Sequencers all that much easier than regular clips. It is the advanced capabilities that I like. For example, each lane being a different length.

The beta 2 is working super snappy under M1 native with OS 11.4. I have never experienced such a snappiness in a DAW!! It is even faster than Logic in loading the plugins (native also). Great job by Bitwig developers

Waveforms are now shown in a Perceptual scale by default, for easier reading (setting is in the Dashboard under Settings > User Interface > View > Waveform display)

Can anybody please explain what this means...

Does it upscale the waveform display for quieter clips that one can finally now see the waveform??

The waveform display of all clips is scaled differently... so quieter parts are bigger and yes, now you can see quieter clips, or quiet parts of clips with a lot of dynamic range

It is a preferences option... I'll be leaving it on perceptual mode and never touching it again
