Minimalism isn't necessarily "I only use one delay plugin" -- there are other forms of minimalism.

But with this kind: in most categories of FX In most categories of FX, I have one main go-to option, and a few alternates for their specific character or features.

In my Eurorack modular, I have six "main" oscillators, all quite different, none of them dominating over the rest. Plus some other modules that can serve. I don't use them all in every recording, but like having the wider variety available.

In synths overall, my preferences are for simpler and characterful synths, and not just one of them. I would rather have a Microbrute and Aalto and Fundamental than some 8-layer multitimbral monster with 39 kinds of filters and 6 LFOs and 6 ADSRs and 6 MSEGs per voice. I prefer 2-op FM over 6-op FM. I also patch from scratch and use FX as an integral part of sound design, though.

It's very good to really have deep experience/knowledge with some pieces of your gear so you can get the most out of them and really know what makes it unique. Otherwise it's very easy to write off "just another monosynth" or whatever. This simultaneously means you should limit how much gear you're working with in order to be able to go that deep, and work with a variety of gear so you don't have tunnel vision and do have the ability to truly choose favorite(s) rather than just settling for the first thing you tried.

Also there are no wrong answers.

I used to have a plugin folder that was 3 pages long. Now I pretty much use those in Cubase, impOSCar, and 2 of the Korg collection synths. As for FX - Cubase + 1 delay plugin + 1 impulse player. And a shitload of h/w (I'm as silly with h/w as s/w people are with plugins).

I reckon now I don't have enough, would like more, but simply can't be bothered looking properly as I don't spend enough time in the studio anyway. So somewhere between the two extremes is right for me. I just don't know whereabouts in the spectrum I lie. :?

TBH, I don't really give a shit. I use what I use until I want more.

maybe subjective and rather pointless but it's social media, idly sharing and shooting the breeze. I wondered for a brief time if I was on the spectrum myself, you know, relatability index not that high. but I guess not.

I don't buy into the idea a restricted {instrumental} palette is more conducive to creativity, not thru itself but in terms of a lot of compressor etc options before me, f**k no, I take plenty of time in sound design as it is. But I create templates after that process so when an idea hits (it's really wearing two different hats. setup cf execution) the world is my oyster; this would not be with what is often called choice paralysis.

I’m a maximalist. I like my plugin folder to be like a huge English garden. Unkempt and wild. I find it fun and inspiring to look at the name of a plugin and barely remember what it is or why I bought it. Open that sucker up and let it come back to me. Rediscover the magic. Let the software hold the reigns for a bit. Fun.

My cold heart smiles when I read something like this

It's just a bit sad that they don't start multiplying and cross-breed with each other. I've tried to put Diva next to Omnisphere in hope for them to start noticing each other. But so far no results.

I have it down to six:

Arturia V collection 7 + all the effects
Komplete 13
RP Explorer 6
Soundtoys 5
Eventide H9 effects Collection
A folder of reverbs.

How minimalist is that!

Post

haha, I see Komplete 13 there immediately, so... not extremely :)

Gotta stay away from VST4free, freeware and magware, no wonder I struggle to finish stuff. (ditching Waves, except IR-1)
I keep whittling down and then gathering again. :help: It's no longer about the music. :x
