Will Daws Eventually End Up As Hardware ?

Well, you could... but isn't that just boring ? As for sounds that's subjective, XG sounds can be manipulated rather extensively. In any case.. the merits of portable sequencers / DAW device is that it brings the physical aspect of interacting with something more real and tactile, not just a multimedia device, but a dedicated device with aspects used in like you have with digital mixers and keyboards, integrating a dedicated DAW.jamcat wrote: Mon Jun 07, 2021 9:37 pm
You can do that with an iPhone and GarageBand. And you’d have a larger screen with way higher resolution and way better workflow, better sounds, and a way easier time exporting your work product. All in a way smaller footprint. And you could even post nonsense on KvR between takes.
You’re still using a computer—just a primitive one with very little power and an extremely limited interface.
I mean, here's another example, of how inspirational a portable musical device can be integrated...

It doesn't need to be frustrating and obsolete... as this video demonstrates vie the use of an external controller synth... You can learn the navigation of the synth quite quickly with practice as well... and big modern sounds can be created. I've got my current QY100 linked into Studio One vie my Casio XW-G1 Synth which is routed into my audio interface. All I need to do now is connect the keyboard to my QY100 to really explore what it can do with a full range of controls and keys.jamcat wrote: Mon Jun 07, 2021 10:48 pm I’d take boring and efficient over frustrating and obsolete.
Also, that video sounds like ‘90s Muzak.

heh well no, i was just stating a literal fact actually. And adding it for no good reason im afraid.jancivil wrote: Mon Jun 07, 2021 9:52 pm "I only use a DAW to send midi really. If I even do that." and many of us could not be more different than you.
One impression I get from those remarks is someone thinking that those of us who need massively more in a computer interface and workstation are somehow stuck for ideas without having it all set up. (I could go anywhere and write music down on whatever, I have rhythmic ideas all day and all night, but executing them with completely convincing drums needs the power it needs. I'm not interested in half-assed, some of us were traumatized by half-assed for decades.
If for some reason I want to work with the ideas by actuating notes and recording and I have stupidly ventured out into the wild, one supposes iPad as well-sufficient.)
thing about this thread, no one in it is actually using "hardware" as their DAW, are they. The advocate side is doing kinda sorta but... and doubling down. If this comes true for yous, more power to ya. As a general goalpost it's still standing, no score.
*not using hardware in place of it either. the hw i use is just naturally multi-track in the way it works is all.

generally I have the sense all the time around here of people who have never done anything but synths (and maybe some 90s sequencers or drum pad thingies), & who have no idea what instrumentalists in the acoustical sphere, let alone composers in the oldschool sense, even do. and come away with a pretty distorted view of the landscape.

They could easily fit Studio One on an electronic device more advanced than a basic Ipad. Essentially it would mean removing the actual desktop or laptop from the equation and doing things in the old school way. Look at this for example...

Glue an interface to an ipad and there you go, job done.

Any device that run software is computer. Just because you can't see operating system starting in jv1080 it doesn't mean that it's not computer. It is. Any MPC, Machine, Yamaha or Roland workstations have computer inside.

Agree. I have bought other hardware alternatives to DAW in vain, but my MPC One served me very well for a year before returning to Reason. Both as recorder of guitar and as basic DAW. Great portability too. It had a very nice workflow to my preferences and a very fine sample engine with loads of snappy, rude or smooth filters to my liking. Few knobs but with touch screen and thus far beyond the click based menu diving of workstations el classico. Its plugin instruments are pretty standard, but do the deed and can easily be replaced by converting to midi track.

That is a great reason to not want to use a Iphone for doing music.jamcat wrote: Mon Jun 07, 2021 9:37 pm You can do that with an iPhone and GarageBand. yup, we had the big studio desk for pro tools, it was a mac of some description, but aside from pressing the on button on the mac, there was no looking at a computer, setting up, risk of surfing net instead.pixel85 wrote: Tue Jun 08, 2021 7:14 am Any device that run software is computer. any musicians we brought in, saw desk, with protocols showing on two monitors. but wouldn't see "computer"
but it was just that, big arsed fancy peripherals is all
