Agree, really want to hear what he really means and wants to achieve, think it's most appropriate thing to do on audio forum.andymcbain wrote: ↑Tue Jun 15, 2021 1:06 pmI think so too. Though it would still be helpful to hear some examples

When my partner got back to music making after 2 decades, he asked me how to achieve that smooth glueing of everything in modern music too and than slapped reverb on stereo bus in his attempt to emulate the sound which made him kinda happy, he also likes to have things so separated, it's his old mixing mindset, I on other hand strive to have as much coherence as I can with every sound I pick and process, aim more to have good big picture, than just great separated mix, it's mindset, think OP is in the same shoes as my partner.

I always felt that gluey feeling is a result of compressing the crap out of everything until almost no dynamics is left.

There’s that too, also using distortion/saturation/tape on stereo bus, in other words affecting group of things with same effects, video I posted on previous page is adressing that kind of philosophy.

He can't share any, because he bought those reference tracks.andymcbain wrote: ↑Mon Jun 07, 2021 12:51 pm Could you post some examples of tracks that have the "thick and muddy" sound so we can hear?
(tbh there must be at least one on YouTube)
We are the KVR collective. Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated.

It would seem the OP is trying to find the balance between being too muddy and also having clarity from the way that I read it. But that's interpretation and I could be mistaken.

Like Bones said, I would try to add some reverb and dampen it, then mess around with some phase with Mfreeformphase or maybe Disperser if you want it to be muddy without affecting the low end that much and add dynamics

Yeah I think "muddy" just means density. Modern melodic Trance can be very full-on, densely layered and intense, sonically - a far cry from the minimal sound in the 90's. Now it's like 6 synth layers and 5 risers at the same time
My suggestion is... add more layers.

That makes more sense.MogwaiBoy wrote: ↑Mon Jul 12, 2021 11:23 pm Yeah I think "muddy" just means density. Modern melodic Trance can be very full-on, densely layered and intense, sonically - a far cry from the minimal sound in the 90's. Now it's like 6 synth layers and 5 risers at the same time

Parallel distortion on a mix works really nicely as well when treated like a reverb send.
