i like the idea of this kind of thing:

but these are mostly loops. i want one-shot sounds. i don't understand where artists like the faint, depeche mode, nine inch nails etc get their incredible drum sounds.

from sample cds? processed custom-sampled drums? loops? synths with effects? albums they own? all of the above?

can somebody lead me in the right direction if i want unique drum samples that not everybody is using? if that means buy a few fx processors and some good dry drum samples and create my own, recommend some fx processors and drum samples. but hopefully it isn't something i've already thought of.

please help!

you love the same drums I love.

I know that some of those bands used samplers (Akai, E-Mu) for the drums. I also know Martin Gore used Kontakt sampler for his latest solo album.

they use samplers but where do they get their sample cds? i just bought dr-008. was that the wrong decision? it doesn't have an akai converter. i heard something about chickensys being able to convert.

They're not using sample CDs. They're... umm... sampling, using their samplers!!!

I don't know the style of drums you guys are looking for, but here's a nifty one to try:

Pull that old 70's era stereo out of the attic. Plug a dynamic mic into it, and tap the pop screen. Sample the result with another mic.

Or alternately, sample the inevitably scratchy volume knob.

a vinyl player makes it easier becasue its usually easier to find material,
but ofcourse you can sample whitout one to, i sample from just about anything, CD's, mp3's, radio or anything that sounds.
just watch out so you dont break any copyrights.

afterwards when cleaning up and cutting up my recordings into samples im using beatcreator, (the dull work wich often can scare away sampling beginners)

i just sampled a kick and a snare from the faint song "let the poison spill from your throat" by converting an apple lossless audio file with dbpoweramp to wav and then loading that into audacity and carefully stripping it. the drums in that song in certain parts were made to where the kick and snare are playing by themselves. obviously most songs are not like that, most artists are not that stupid to leave a killer kick or snare by itself with nothing else playing.

i will look at wavesurgeon. thanks for the recommendation. i just bought soniccharge microtonic, psoft void, and fxpansion dr-008. hopefully i can make some pretty music with these.

be careful with samples from other artists. copyright...

There's a kick and a snare in a Skinny Puppy song called 'Morpheus Laughing' which also sound in isolation in a part of the song and they sound...simply great.

then don't forget the amazing kick and snare in NIN's 'Eraser'; I think you can isolate them at the beginning of the song.

i don't have that album right now in apple lossless (i have to sell all my cds on ebay because i can't afford to keep them). i am going to buy the new re-issue of the downward spiral this tuesday though. i'm excited.

yeah, i love that song and i remember being particularly fascinated with the drumming.

yeah I'm going to buy the new edition too, mostly cos my downward spiral copy is almost 10 years old and it's a bit...overused.

yeah great drumming. check out also Skinny Puppy songs, great drumming. and of course Front Line Assembly, their drumming goes beyond words.
