Hi all,

I thought you may be interested to know about this new, free, collaborative online DAW: https://faders.io (https://faders.io)

As I am involved in making this, I’d be very grateful for any feedback, directly to me (brecht@semanticaudio.co.uk (mailto:brecht@semanticaudio.co.uk) or DM) or on our built-in forum https://community.faders.io (https://community.faders.io)

In a nutshell: it has the functionality you want from any DAW, but also a bunch of extra features including:
  • real-time collaboration and video chat
  • no downloads or installation, always up to date
  • log in anywhere in the world to access all your files and sessions
  • a completely rethought and intuitive user interface
  • automatic labelling, grouping, and mixing to speed up your workflow
We made it with just one goal in mind: making the whole music production process as easy as possible, without compromising on quality or versatility.

Playing the devil's advocate here I have questions. How do we know our projects are safe and won't be compromised and what happens to our projects if you cease operations ?

Not my cup of tea but good luck with your endeavor. :tu:

How do you pay for the bandwidth? (There ain’t no such thing as a free lunch…)

It looks promising! Especially real-time collab and Stage View as I always wanted something like visual panner integrated in a DAW.
Keep it going! :D

Very fair question, and as this is a top concern for any creative professional we do put a lot of thought into this, both from a legal/operational (https://faders.io/terms (https://faders.io/terms)) as well as technical point of view. Like many, we use Amazon Web Services for storage, which by sheer size and reputation we deem very secure and reliable. Access to the platform itself follows state-of-the-art security practices, so it is as secure as any good software out there.
If we were to cease operations, as a last resort we would certainly alert users with as much notice as possible to download and back up assets and sessions.

Indeed not! But we are currently more interested in reaching as many potential users as possible, and getting feedback.
After that, we don't expect to charge for any of the current offering, but power users could decide to pay for extra storage (above the free 5 GB), new functionality, and premium content. The business can evolve going forward, but we believe in making an excellent product first and the rest will follow.

Keep them coming, thanks for trying it out!

Is there a reason Safari is not supported?

There is: Safari doesn't support some of the Web Audio API we rely on for audio processing, so your experience will currently be better on Firefox or Chrome.

But they announced full support in a soon-to-be-released version, at which point Faders should run equally well in Safari too.

Great suggestion! We'll put it on the "Maybe" pile :hihi:

Hey there, I tried this out and found a few bugs:
  • The registration page's scroll is broken
  • When editing a MIDI note's length, shortening a note doesn't stop playback when the note's new end is sooner then the current playback time
  • On small screens, editing a synth's parameters doesn't work because the panel extends past the top of the screen, where I can't see it
With that said, I think you've done a very good job so far but I would assume you're going to have a difficult time competing with BandLab. They've got very good free advertising by providing Cakewalk free to people who have an account with them.
