i just want to write good songs.
all of those bands are still just pop bands, they are writing good songs. you can do things as fresh as you want but if you don't write good songs i'm not going to like you. aphex twin tried to get away with that on a lot of songs he's written.
haha i sounded so lame in that paragraph.
point is, i just want to write good songs. good sounds/synths inspire me.

yah, I went off on an artsy-fartsy twist there. Sorry.
uhh.. the Cycling'74 sample disks (Cycles) look (sound) fresh. (and a tad too expensive for me to purchase)
Do you plan on using vocals?
If so, what will the vocals be like? I ask this because I've often found that narrowing down on a theme or concept (or figuring out what the theme or concept is ((if any))) can really help to put the rest of the pieces together.

oh, I'm a mangler too.
Here are my favorite free or donationware plugins for reshaping sounds:
ANYTHING by Ioplong (@Smartelectronix) - PC only
Tweakbench - Mashup, Sideslip, and Breakdown
DestroyFX - Geometer, Srubby and Bufferoveride
some Oli Larkin plugins too.
These are all easy realtime tools that can make any sample unrecognizable in no time at all.

and, also, I feel I should add, as a sometimes obnoxious conceptualist, I truly believe you can make something fresh with the equipment/software you already have.

hmm... or maybe make any sample sound like it was mashed up by those perticular plugins (at least to the trained ear)drag.net wrote:

I too like the music that you mentioned inspired you.

Not sure how relavant this is, but i found an interview about the guy who engineered some of the NIN albums. He talks about various parts of making 'Fragile' including the drums.
