Noticed something funny: when you take the init patch and increase the volume of the second oscillator to max, like the first one, they are slightly detuned, despite the fine tune knob being set to 0. However, if you turn that knob to +3, there is no detuning at all, which you might have expected when it is set to 0 8)

You're right. I hadn't noticed it before, yet it's clear as a bell.

I also noticed that even when resonance is set to zero, there seems to be quite a bit of resonance in the sound. On Retrologue 2 I get an almost indistinguishable sound when I set its resonance knob to 25% 8)

I noticed with several analog type synths that they always seem to have some resonance on, even when set to zero. It gives the sound a certain shine.

Post

You should really become a beta tester. That kind of stuff is really useful for devs to nail out bugs. :)

That resonance thing could be normal though. Some synths always sound as if there's a bit of resonance. Dune 1, for example. Roland JP-8k as well, I think.

Post

Hehe, thanks. Developers are free to send me their beta versions :hihi:

Yes, a certain amount of resonance behind the scenes seems to be common practice. Maybe it was unavoidable on analog hardware and we learned to like that sound, just like with pitch drift etc., which was probably not intended originally.

Post

That tiny bit of resonance is definitely a signature sound there. I have a MKS-70 here (basically two JX-8Ps), and it's the same.

and the slight detuning as e-crooner mentioned, even at zero, occurs on the hardware aswell i believe? Think Martin mentioned this years ago

The envelope times are very long, at max they feel like an eternity :)

^ That is pretty normal though

Maybe. I only noticed because I am used to the envelopes in Retrologue by now, whose max timings are like 1/4 of the PG-8X's 8)

How many waves are there per voice in unison mode? It sounds nice, probably because it is rather narrow, little stereo width unlike most modern synths, hence denser and more of an 80's character.

Post

Ah i see. I understand. Waves per unison voice ? not shure what you mean. I suppose you have to read the manual, but PG8X works pretty much exactly as the hardware. And when in unison mode, it is in mono, not stereo.

Oh, there is a manual :D Found it on his site, it says 2 voices per note in unison mode. That explains why it sounds so similar to Retrologue, because on that synth stereo width only kicks in from 2.5 waves upwards. At 2.0 waves it is kind of mono as well like on the PG-8X.

Post

Hehe yeah, it is supposed to be very close, if not identical to the hardware. Still, if you want stereo, just enable the chorus, wich is antastic though. But im shure you knew that already :tu:

Don't forget there are two unison modes, keep clicking on the unison mode button.

I know, it merely transposes one of the two unison voices an octave lower, almost like a sub. It doesn't change the stereo width.
