Digital music, not electronic music.

If it's on a computer, well, a computer is electronics. if you're hearing it at all, it's analog sound.
if a specific personal assessment of what is de rigeur in EDM is the metric for definitions for you, that is passing silly, hence people are making fun

Yes, quite a few of them now listen to electronic music. Not EDM for the most part.TribeOfHǫfuð wrote: Fri Jul 02, 2021 12:39 pmDid they really give a fck?CrystalWizard wrote: Fri Jul 02, 2021 6:24 am I have had to explain and show so many people that there has been electronic music for about 100 years

My point was that EDM is an umbrella term underneath the much larger term Electronic Music. EDM showed up in what the late 80’s early 90’s. As i commented Electronic Music has been around for about a century. I’ve had close friends tell me they hate electronic music. When i asked them what exactly they meant it was electronic dance music that they had heard in clubs, they had no idea there was any other kind of electronic music. When i turned them on to Cluster, TD, etc. they became electronic music fans.ghettosynth wrote: Fri Jul 02, 2021 3:28 pmThe term EDM is a problem because it has been co-opted to mean a specific genre of EDM. For the better part of a couple of decades EDM was an umbrella term. The general public misused the word techno which, as I'm sure that everyone knows, is a specific genre.CrystalWizard wrote: Fri Jul 02, 2021 6:24 am Electronic music is what i usually say.
Although i like some of it, i somewhat consider EDM a scourge in that it has caused the average listener to think that all electronic music is EDM. I have had to explain and show so many people that there has been electronic music for about 100 years and much of it doesn’t have a 4/4 beat (or any beat at all).
End rant
So, if EDM is the umbrella term, and edm is the annoying genre of music favored by many half-naked youts, then I coin the following term UDM, underground dance music, to mean the following.
UDM = EDM-edm.
Of course not all electronic music is electronic dance music, but the best electronic dance music is UDM, IMNSHO, of course.
Just being pedantic

'specific genre' would be a *species* of a genre[/pedantic]
I like electronic music that doesn't exort anybody to put their hands in the air
I know nothing about the - or any - scene, I may have remained completely tunneled away from that but for KVR, it's but a stereotype to me, admittedly

I once heard an analog sound so fat, in full stereo that I had a braingasm & blacked out. When I came to I was told I had been putting my hands in the air for nearly a half hour

I knew what you meant. I looked up the earliest reference that I could find with respect to EDM once, I'm pretty sure that it was early 90s. The term EBM goes back further.CrystalWizard wrote: Sat Jul 03, 2021 2:45 amMy point was that EDM is an umbrella term underneath the much larger term Electronic Music. Note: It's best not to take these threads TOO seriously.
I will say though that I don't think that I really have any friends who proclaim to "hate electronic music." Maybe a neighbor, but I have no interest in evangelizing to him about anything.
