I was DJ local clubs and stuff
started out at the gay bar
getting all the queens twirling their feather boa's
It was fun.The money was ok,and it was a bit of a rush filling the dance floor.
But truth be told ,although I do enjoy club music
my real love was always a bit more alternative
and in the end it was just playing other peoples music and the rush wore off with familiarity of it.
Then another DJ turned me onto acid (the software)
from there it was making remixes to submit to the Bjork Remix Web
which led into writing my own songs
and then I landed here
I can honestly say that what i'm doing now is more satisfying
and I don't have any drunken white girls asking to use the microphone so they can sing along to 'bad girls'.. badly
or asking me to play 'that song...you know..it goes..da da da.. oo oo'
thats my take on it anyway.

I've often found myself wishing that dancers would embrace those mixes where the records weren't syncing up. Perhaps try to get into the idea of attempting to dance to two things at once, while also acknowledging that, well, uh... that's kind of hard to do. Maybe. Yah know?

I dj'ed for 4 years in a club in Albany, ny - doing one, two, and sometimes 3 nights a week, one night was all hard beat industrial/electro, one night darkambient noize and experimental, and another night i did infrequently was kind of an 80's night - though that usually meant more post punk/punk stuff than anything else.
I miss it, but I am more looking forward to performing live now than getting back into dj'ing - though I'd love to do a hybrid set of remixes/etc... that would be a blast

I use to dj a bit, and loved it. I was always able to spin the stuff I wanted to (house, tech-house), so that was cool. I think there is something sublime about putting together a great mix (the right track at the right time with an appropriate mix that fits the bill) that the crowd feeds off of. At 3am it can be a real experience for the dancers and dj alike. I don't think it matters whether it is vinyl or digital, although there is a performance aspect of the crowd watching a dj mix as compared to staring at a laptop.
It's damn hard work getting all the hot releases. At least it used to be... on record day it was a mad rush to get the 6 available copies of the latest Siesta, Drop or any other hot label.

It doesn't matter to me if it is vinyl or digital.quincy wrote:All i meant is that if i wanted to DJ hiphop or similar then i'd be so much more keen on Vinyl. But given that i'm more into electronica and i'm not so interested in scratching and beat-juggling and all that, digital DJing seems more suitable.splattabreakz wrote: and whats wrong with your taste in music that makes it unlikley?
I'm much more keen to experiment with filtering, looping and FX than to do clever scratch trickery.
What's a DJ if he/she can't scratch?
And yes, you can scratch a CD now!

I think I DJ'ed for perhaps a period of almost 15 years of which a few years were as a pro-DJ. Like said before it costs buckets full of money to even try and keep up and keep an edge for the dance-floor
I loved every moment of it and have a big book of memories, but have given up on DJ'ing fully 5 years ago. Sold the major part of my collection a few years ago and yes.... it still itches.
When I hear a great dance track in the cafe I can just envision putting it on and see a dancefloor of happy people dancing the night away. I'll never go back to DJ'ing though; although I must confess I wouldnt mind doing a one-off once, but it'd more likely be with chill and alternative music rather then house only.

I DJ, but I've never played out in the proper sense, only house parties and such. I record the odd set from time to time, and I would share this with you guys only that's illegal. Say no to copyright theft etc.

I should add that for me the real buzz isn't seeing people dance, but getting one of those mixes going where you can leave two tunes spinning together for 3 mins or whatever.
