Hey I just got the DS404 and I can not for the life of me get it to open any .wav files that I've exported out of Sonar. The Wavs are all 16 bit 44.1khz and mono, but just won't open. I read in another thread that there could be some extra stuff in there put in by the manafacturer so I tried opening them up in another program and doing a save as/export but they still won't open. I also download the MDA Riffview program, but don't know what it is I should be looking for there. Am I just missing something here? Or will I have to be going out to purchase Cooledit just to import my own samples? BTW I had the same problem with the SR-202.

Something's up there, Funky. I have opened .wavs created in any number of apps, including Sonar. E-mail me, and describe what you are doing...Maybe even e-mail the file you wish to open.

Ok I found a workaround. If I use Winamp to open the .wavs then export them from winamp they'll load in DS404, but not directly from an export in Sonar. Scot I just may take you up on that offer and e-mail you one of the wavs tomorrow. For some reason if I use Sonar to create the wavs and as my wav editor I just can't get them to load without having to go through winamp or something.

Email it to me too funkybot, I'll check it out here.

OK it looks like Scot was able to confirm that exporting a wav directly from Sonar will not allow it to be opened in DS404 without going through another wav editor first. Would it be possible for Muon and co. to make the DS404 (and SR202) a little less picky in regards to opening wav files? If not it's not too hard to work around since Winamp seems to do the trick (and it's free but it would still be nice to skip that step all together).

Hmmmm. Doesn't work from SONAR in W2k. Doesn't work from MASSIVA in either W2k or W98SE, but it DOES work from Fruityloops 3.56 in both. What's different, I wonder? Not a very big issue for me, personally, as I use all kinds of sample-editors directly from inside SONAR, so it's not even much of an extra step, but I'd still be curious as to why it happens. When you try to load one of these SONAR/MASSIVA .wav exports, the DS404 just ignores it (the F1 buttons winks a little, but nothing else). It loaded files from ALL of the sample editors I tried, including Wavelab, Sound Forge, Seamless Looper, Beatcreator, and EZEditor.

It's entirely possible, that when writing a data chunk into a WAV file, some applications leave an extra byte or two floating about where it shouldn't be. Cool Edit, for example, leaves an extra handful of empty bytes in the SMPL chunk that the WAV specification says shouldn't be there at all. Akai S5000/S6000 samplers do something quite similar too. Other applications no doubt do wierd stuff that they shouldn't be doing as well!!

Both DS404 and SR202 interpret the WAV specification in a "hard" manner. This means that, if a data chunk is of an incorrect size/structure then the file is deemed to be corrupt and it is rejected. We could, of course, change this so that the chunk size is not cross-referenced during loading against the spec but then you'd lose the functionality of detecting a corrupted WAV file which we believe to be important.

Scott, seeing as you're able to recreate this drop me a mail and we'll find out what it is that Sonar is up to.

Cheers
Dave

I think you should loosen it up a bit with both instruments, as at least in my case and probably overall the DS404 and SR202 are probably viewing these .wavs with extra chuncks as corrupt more than they are recognizing real corrupt .wavs. That way when a .wav didn't load or play properly in DS404 I'd know it was corrupt as opposed to having a .wav that opens pretty much everywhere else but DS404. Does that make sense? If you guys want I could also send you a .wav that I exported out of Sonar that didn't work, or help out in trying to pin down what it is. Just drop me a line if you'd like my help.

No, you've misunderstood. DS404 and SR202 don't reject WAV files with extra chunks, they reject WAV files with BROKEN chunks. In the case of an Akai S5000/S6000 WAV file, for example, Akai decided for reasons unknown to add an extra 18 bytes of data to the SMPL chunk that aren't in the WAV specification. Now, if they'd done what they were supposed to do and put this extra data in a different chunk, it wouldn't have made the slightest difference.

We'll certainly be interested in looking at any uncompressed 16-bit WAV files that won't load into DS404. Drop me a mail.

Dave
