Guys, we are in 2021... Still there is no free option for a Multi Channel Analyzer (like Voxengo Plus) and no center and sides plugin option (like Waves Center)?
I love coffee...

Waves Center doesn't even have any paid alternative (as it's not simple mid/side processor). So there's that.
I also didn't saw free alternative to Voxengo's Analyzer but I never really dig that much.

much more money tho.

I don't think there's a free multichannel spectrum analyser tho.

Oh yeah, definitely more expensive :D I never saw this company. Although I heard about DynOne - apparently it's a very good compressor.

I found this plugin as an alternative to Waves Center... I tested it side by side. Yes it doesn't get exactly the same result, especially on more extreme settings, but for smooth settings it sounds good. I think you can break the branch, after all it is a tool to use from time to time. But the multi analyzer didn't really find any :(

What do you guys use Waves Center for?

For stuff like this:

Also for dealing with sends, reverbs/spatial fx etc. often with automation. It helps to clean up the center signal without affecting width/proportions of stereo signal - this is the main difference to standard M/S processing.

Center plugin, been around for ages : https://aom-factory.jp/products/stereo-imager-d/

Multi channel analyzer : https://www.hornetplugins.com/plugins/h ... ultifreqs/

And ofcourse multi channel analyzing is also available in some daw's and plugins, like Cubase and Pro-Q3.

Nowadays we have tools like Izotope RX, Acon Acoustica, Spectralayers and more, which can do these kind of tasks much better.

I don't see anywhere in RX where I could manipulate phantom center like in Waves Center. I have only Standard version tho. RX Advanced has Center Extract but it seems that it's not available as a plugin?
I can't find any information that Acon Acosutica has this functionality and for Spectralayers I only see mentions that you can do 'tricks' to do it.
Can you show me how the software mentioned by you is doing it and is doing it 'better' (whatever it means)?

can anyone explain what phantom center vs m/s is?
I never used waves but i did use Leapwing and it did something different to m/s

In that vid that you posted, he's using Center to change the mix balance to hear the vocals better. The tools i mention all have "spectral rebalance" functions, meaning that you can adjust (and process) individual elements in a mix. With these tools you can do all the things that Waves is describing for Center, and much more.

Btw : Waves Center alters your sound as soon as you insert it. So i would be very careful before using it.

Ah, this. Yeah, the only problem with Spectral Rebalance is that it's creating artefacts because it affects more than just the phantom center of the signal. So I don't even consider these tools to be similar in what they do + it's not real-time + it can't be used as a plugin (so I can't automate the process in the DAW while listening in real time). So while it has its advantages it also has disadvantages.

For what Center do, using Spectral Rebalance is kinda like using katana to cut the slice of the bread ;)

I just checked and you're right that Waves Center is affecting signal right after it's inserted. But when I was using it, it has no impact on the quality of the mix.

Hey friend, I asked for freeware... Paid and really expensive plugins like the ones you mentioned, they do all the work, for sure.

As for Waves affecting the sound, it really happens... But after some tests I realized that it's possible to adjust it so that it doesn't affect anything. The secret is to adjust the upper controls, because even though they seem "flat", they are actually already acting, throwing part of the frequencies to the center or to the sides.
