Has anyone here done a direct install of windows 10 as an update to windows 7 while keeping the installed software. I have lots of stuff I'd rather not reinstall. Wondering what the chance of success is. I don't mind if I have to re register some stuff.

The plan is to do a full system drive clone as a backup and then attempt to do the install. That way I can roll it back if it screws up all my stuff or becomes unstable.

Curious about anyone's experience updating windows while keeping everything else in place.

Yes, I have. Make sure the internet is turned off, turn it off in bios if you have to.
The internet screws the install up.

Just make sure to select keep files and apps.
It works well, I just finally updated. Slow to start up, but it plays games well.

Likely with an SSD or two, it will work even better.
What I did, is I made a a stick from the site. Next I ran the setup.exe right from windows 7 after turning off antivirus. Not the way they recommend but their way crashed on Me the first time I tried.
I don't make audio products anymore. I sell furniture & smart products.

Thanks kingoz!

Sounds cool. I've checked with lots of folks and the odds seem good that it'll work. I'll have lots of stuff that refused to install on win 7 and probably better performance all around. I'm just trying to get as much anecdotal info as possible. I know it should be fine, and most stories I've heard are that it was fine.

I mostly just don't want to have to reinstall stuff. I have a ludicrous amount of software. This will get me setup to switch to a dual cpu composing rig when I slap together my new system.
