Producing music on a laptop in a coffee shop?! No way, that's just stupid.

I bring my entire iMac, extra Thunderbolt Display, three hardware synths, two MIDI controllers, audio interface, and a vocal booth. 8)

I'll make music in a cafe, but only if I can't get to the mountain top, or beach during sunset.

Yeah, the grungy stuff is produced on your mobile while getting pit maneuvered while you're just minding your own business driving along.

I think you'll find that a Dell XPS 13 still has longer battery life than an M1 MacBook Air. I've read as much in at least two different reviews.

Especially when they run out of cream.

I'm seeing reviews saying that despite the XPS being in power saving mode which affects performance the M1 still wins easily. But I guess if one is in the cafe for wanking then this might not matter.

If I buy a computer with maximum power for demanding tasks, I usually don't look for long battery life. ;)

Actually, those two things exclude themselves. Which is the whole story with M1 really. Any mid to high tier desktop CPU runs circles around it in terms of performance. I mean, it's nice that Apple managed to pull off such a good performance to energy consumption ratio, but, it's still a mobile CPU, created for low energy consumption.

Good for wanking in coffee shops though, of course.

Aha, so by using lots more power you get more performance at a lower efficiency. And when Apple's next gen comes out it will shit on everything, since it's more efficient. So look out for the M1X/M2 folks wanking off in cafes running 400 track projects on battery.

I'm pretty sure the Engadget review was one and the other I recall specifically was an "M1 v Intel v AMD" comparison. i though I had bookmarked but it was a different article.

I love the way you assume Intel and AMD will sit on their hands and watch Apple iterate on their CPUs. The reality is quite different. Intel's next-gen CPUs will be the first in a long time on a smaller process, making them more efficient. They will also offer up to 16 cores and 24 threads, making them way more powerful than the current gen. Apple will need to come up with something pretty damned special to compete, much less dominate.

Laptops have their uses, but I need the space that 3 monitors gives me... Not to mention a decent mouse and keyboard (the alphabet sort). Kudos to anyone who manages to make anything useful with a laptop.

Post

"Need" is a pretty strong word. I use dual monitors at work - one to work on while the other has email (so I can see new jobs coming in) and several explorer windows open, but I don't need them at all when I am working at home. I actively dislike working across multiple screens, mainly because I don't like having to turn my head all the time to look at things, I prefer it all right in front of me.

The one time I did sort of appreciate it was when I had a super-wide 22:9 screen and Windows 8, which had some very handy configurations that disappeared in Win10. I used to have my applications open in the centre of the screen, basically at 16:9, with other things in separate "splits" on either side, usually email on one and a couple of explorer windows on the other, or Zune if I was listening to music. But that was about as wide as I was comfortable with.

I haven't had a desktop computer since 2006 and I definitely prefer working on my laptop than my big workstation at the office. Work got hacked a few months ago and we couldn't use our workstations for a couple of months. They hired in replacements for most people but I worked on my own laptop throughout because I preferred it. I didn't even bother connecting it to the 27" monitors on my desk. I think it's all about what you're used to and comfortable with.

I also don't see any reason to have more than one computer. It's been bugging me that my laptop is too big/bulky to cart around and I've had to resort to a Surface Pro as well, which is why I just bought a new laptop that will (hopefully) replace them both. It' snot quite as powerful as the laptop and not quite as portable was the Surface but if it can replace both, it's worth the compromises to me. Best of all, I got it so cheap that if I sell the other two I will be ahead by a few hundred bucks.
