I refrained because my response would indeed probably not follow your OP, but I definitely agree with Kumal....
HD ilok for me is begging for trouble.

I had a number of issues with my old computer. I requested new iLok activations from PSP, Audified and UVI and they were all great. I went to the developers before going to iLok.
Overall I feel that I like the dongle rather than the cloud system. I´ve had zero problems with the dongle but I have had issues with the cloud, but then I may be the only one who likes the dongle. :tu:

I bought a hardware iLok cos I wanted Slate Trigger. But now I've moved all my licenses over to it from my computer auths, I feel much better. I did wonder what would happen if my hard drive (albeit an SSD) went tits up and lost all my auths. Now I've learned that if your iLok breaks, you just report it as lost and you get temporary licenses, you contact the devs, they replace the licenses and all is well with the world.

Unless you want to start a general discussion about iLok or copy protections, I'm ok with anything. :)

Do you mean hardware iLok (dongle), or machine activation?

I think he meant Hard Disk activation.

Nothing wrong with ilok imo. I honestly like it, as opposed to many I think. I once got a license after I lost an ilok. Customer service is quite good and responsive.

I had no issues getting reauthorizations when my computer died a few years ago.

I ditched my iLok dongle a few years ago when I sold my Pro Tools license. Recently I had to reinstall the iLok software to demo some plugins, and requested a few local activations without a dongle. So far it's been working great.

Can't you deactivate the licenses through the app on your new computer, and then also re-activate on the new computer?

That would defeat the whole purpose of machine activations, wouldn't it?

The only way I could imagine that making sense is if you could delete the activations on another computer, but, iLok obviously doesn't allow that.

I'm going to log into my iLok account from another computer and see if I can deactive licenses. Pretty sure when my hardrive died and I got a new computer, that's the method I used. Note: I don't use the hardware dongle. Since your account is secured (password), they really should let you do that. Cloud licenses definitely work that way (activate/deactivate on the move, wherever you are).

The only trouble I had with replacing a computer was WAVES plugins - they were activated on the dead computer and it wasn't easy to deactivate them.

You can easily move your local license freely from one computer to another using iLok License Manager app. All you have to do is deactivate a license and then reactivate it on a new computer. Some plugins even allow you to activate it on two devices.

I use the iLok dongle expressly for this reason, pay for ZDT annually, and keep a spare iLok dongle in reserve, so that I don't have to reach out to the devs. I have around 1000 plugins on my dongle, and should it ever be lost or go faulty, I can restore all my licenses to the spare dongle immediately. For me, iLok dongles makes setting up a new workstation much simpler. No licensing mess. Nothing to deactivate. Just install and go.

This left only a couple of developers that I had to contact when the motherboard on my Macbook recently died (bad RAM): Ableton and Lennar Digital (Sylenth). The rest either didn't keep track of activations, or they had a mechanism on their website to deactivate existing machines.

I know that some people have had problems with iLok activation, but it has been nearly flawless for me. It just works.
