there's a few main 'types' of video software

video editors : timeline based, designed to pull in clips on a timeline, and turn them into a single video: stuff like resolve, adobe premiere, sony vegas

video compositors : primarily intended for processing 'layers' of video clips occurring at the same time, eg adding effects, or stuff like merging different shadow/lighting/occlusion passes from a 3d renderer. stuff like adobe after effects, nuke, natron. often node-based like reaktor than timeline based.
if you've ever seen a breakdown of a CGI-heavy scene from a film where you see the actors merged with real stuff, greenscreen stuff, footage of stuff that was filmed separately, 3d stuff and effects in a single shot; that's compositing.

note that some editors will do a certain amount of comping (and effects), and vice versa.

vj software : triggering and playing back video live. arkaos, resolume etc maybe even some specific max/msp or touchdesigner stuff

which overlaps a bit with

visualisers : a bit more automatic/generative, usually driven direct from audio

and then there's tools like

video capture : what it says, from camera or your screen. obs etc.

one other related category that we see students interested in is

projection mapping : warps images from a projector so that they 'wrap' around real world shapes. resolume does a bit, and then there's madmapper and the like.

ie stuff that winds up like this

at work I have to know enough about this kind of stuff to justify spending money on it, but its generally other people who support it.

One note on Resolve... don't be dissuaded by talk of a steep learning curve. Though Resolve is a super deep program that allows/facilitates pretty much any kind of visual editing tricks, for what I gather you want to do, there are innumerable youtube tutorials that are specific to your relatively basic needs, that will get you up to speed quickly. An added plus for Resolve is its audio integration. :tu:

It's an amazing play ground... Modeling... rigging... physics engines... fluid dynamics... dancing-gelatinous-fur-balls. 8)

yeah, 3d looks fun indeed, and some lovely moments in that video especially. im just not sure i have any ideas that require it?

i guess, ill have to wait and see what i feel when the fun starts. that's how ive approached music all these years

The 3D part is relatively easy, animating like that sans a motion capture system, that is super hard.

Eye rolls will only be deserved if you can't fit your topic in the correct Video Forum.
