Softube Tape Echoes

I don’t think it actually does anything that other plugins can’t, and I’m not sure that it’s supposed to. It just has a little different sound is all.
I like it, but I don’t have a gajillion delays, still have more than enough though. I don’t have anything else that quite gives the same vibe as this so I decided to pick it up, as I could see myself using is a lot for my music.

That's kinda my thinking. I decided not to get it for now, safe in the knowledge it will be on sale at some point in the future for equal to the launch price, or even less - as is the case with pretty much all plugins.

I wish Softube nothing but success, but I can't imagine launching a dedicated tape delay plugin in 2021, what with all the available permutations on the market. Though saying that, I'm sure that people thought that of launching a dedicated tape delay in, say, 2016... And 2011... And 2006... It does sound nice though!

We could say that about almost anything released these days. Seems like a lot of the developers are just going for a full line of everything, in time. It’s unavoidable. People are still searching for ‘that sound’ and when plugins are released with a little something different from the others we have, or are available, then you know the rest...a company releasing a new plugin in their line seems to bring in money still, if it didn’t work that way I’m sure they’d stop releasing another tape delay into the wild world. Companies also have loyal customers, and filling out their line of products keeps loyal customers coming back.ohdoubleu wrote: Sun Jul 18, 2021 9:12 pm I wish Softube nothing but success, but I can't imagine launching a dedicated tape delay plugin in 2021, what with all the available permutations on the market. I havent heard a tape delay plugin that sounds like Softubes especially the higher Dirt you go. Full dirt and full heads produce an amazing and unique lush effect. For that and some of the other features I think its easily worth the asking price even for me who has a lot of tape echos including hardware. I was liternally raised musically on tape echo so its an effect I am very fond of but only if when it's musicially useful, as Tape Echoes is.

I’m a big fan of delays, and for me I had to demo side by side with my other delays to hear whether or not it was worth it. Alone, I was not blown away the way I have been with their model synths and modular. Nor as I was with Valhalla delay or Ik Space Echoes. But in comparison to my other delays, I have to agree that it does have unique Sonics and musicality that may be value for some (it was for me, I make deep dubby techno). Even with the discount, expensive.

That’s also what convinced me to buy it, when I compared it to my other delays. I don’t need anything crazy from a delay, I generally use them in the most basic way, so with Tape Echoes it’s just about the sound for me.perpetual3 wrote: Mon Jul 19, 2021 6:51 pm I’m a big fan of delays, and for me I had to demo side by side with my other delays to hear whether or not it was worth it. I demo'd it and felt like it was Just Another Delay.
Regardless of whether it sounds 'different' from the dozen delays I already have, it certainly didn't sound particularly exciting / noteworthy.
I'm a BIG fan of Softube's last couple of synth emulations, so I was hoping to be impressed. But, alas, it really strikes me as One More Delay option among the many, many options out there. I'll happily stick with Valhalla Delay for most of my needs (or even just Ableton's Echoes, for that matter, which is a fantastic 'tape'-style delay).

Well, it is a delay. It's just a delay. But what it does with Dirt and Heads, to me, is very unique and nothing Valhalla comes close. In fact, none of my other tape echo plugins can get that incredible swirly dirty sound of Tape Echoes. But, it all depends on what you are looking for - Tape Echoes does simply delay no better than anything else but to me the point are the special features around drive, dirt and heads.mholloway wrote: Mon Jul 19, 2021 10:07 pm I demo'd it and felt like it was Just Another Delay.

Softube seem to have a knack for emulating that old, grungy vintage sound. Their previous tape sim and 2 analog emu's really nailed it.plexuss wrote: Sun Jul 18, 2021 10:59 pm I havent heard a tape delay plugin that sounds like Softubes especially the higher Dirt you go. A well-behaved signature.

Have you tried running Echorec inside Softube Modular? I couldn’t get it to work.

Tape Echoes makes more sense if you're already invested in the ST modular ecosystem. Just as with Model 72 - which I also couldn't justify purchasing since I already got the Synapse Audio and NI versions.zerocrossing wrote: Mon Jul 19, 2021 11:19 pmHave you tried running Echorec inside Softube Modular? for dub and reggae artists (for example) your mileage may vary. The regen from Tape Echoes is quite tameable but it's also possible to get wild, and get a few different tones out of it, mostly due to the Dirt control.
Echorec, as with many delay units, when the feedback starts oscillating it has a fairly set tone. Which makes it able to be distinguished from other delay units.
I think many of the people who can't hear much of a difference between this and other delays possibly aren't slamming the feedback up and twisting the controls like a madman. But that's my favourite thing.
Some of the squeals and artefacts i get from this plugin make me laugh my ass off. I just wish it was hardware and i could buy one to take it apart

This on special this weekend for $49... BUT what I found out, as I was about to pay for it, is if you had Dirty Tape (which is free until sunday) and logged into your account, the tape Echoes is a $29 upgrade
