sure...i can understand the viewpoint of the functionality checklist comparison spreadsheet guys on one extreme having utility...and I can also understand the viewpoint of the I just trust my ears guys on the other extreme having utility...in my experience, the results of the two viewpoints often don't correlate....In the end I trust what my ears tell me regardless of any spec sheet.jens wrote: Tue Jul 20, 2021 12:38 pmNot mine at all - why would that be? The versatile algorithmic reverbs have have multiple different algorithms and/or various parameters that fundamentally change their impulse response - of course often further parameters that increase their versatility such as dynamic processing / additional delay-lines / modulation in the feedback-path / distortion... there is neither a theoretical reason why there would not be able to offer uge versatility nor practical resutls that would support this theory..bermudagold wrote: Tue Jul 20, 2021 7:17 am algorithmic and versatile are almost oxymorons in my experience...
Regardless of how many named algorithms a reverb supposedly has, most algo verbs are some implementation of allpass, FDN, or raytrace, so the number of algorithms can be misleading/deceiving in terms of sonic fingerprints/timbre palettes or any other measure of "versatility"
So according to your "practical results" , which algo verbs do you consider versatile?...can do convincing real spaces, as well as fantastical ones...can be used on a wide variety of instruments with very different transient and release characteristics while retaining the recognizable uniqueness of the instrument?...I dont demo everything, partially why Iclicked on the thread...so educate us

Well, first of all, your goalpost moving is quite blatant here of course - "retaining the recognizable uniqueness of the instrument" is certainly no synonym of versatility.bermudagold wrote: Tue Jul 20, 2021 5:18 pm So according to your "practical results" , which algo verbs do you consider versatile?...can do convincing real spaces, as well as fantastical ones...can be used on a wide variety of instruments with very different transient and release characteristics while retaining the recognizable uniqueness of the instrument?...I dont demo everything, partially why Iclicked on the thread...so educate us
Not to mention that this of course would be relative and a matter of opinion - or what would be your exact, specific and measurable criteria on whether the "recognizable uniqueness of the instrument" is "retained"? What does that mean anyway? I've never came across a reverb that turned a guitar into a trumpet... (well, that would be kinda neat, wouldn't it?)
Having said that, this thread is full to the brim with mentions of versatile reverbs. I'm not sure what would be the purpose of listing some of the yet again...?

you quoted me questioning the validity of my argument based on your "practical results" according to some definition of "versatile" you clearly must have...I simply asked you to give us an example from your experience which for some reason you didn't do...so I am forced to assume you are simply trolling...enjoy

[icy voice]I suggest to read through a thread before replying. Otherwise it is much rather you who is trolling. I've been quite active in this thread and made my suggestions while you've been I don't know where. Just because you are too lazy to do some reading up before giving your unsolicited opinion it in no way indicates any lack of seriosity on my part if I show a lack of willingness to repeat myself.
Also the reply I gave to you is of course perfectly valid anyway without the mention of any examples. [/icy voice]

Btw one of most distinctive\interesting built-in synths reverbs this is in Virsyn synths imo, they use the same rev engine it seems (and ironically it's not works in Tera 3, starting from one of 64bit build).
And their separate Reflect reverb is not the same by sound, despite more complexity.

Well, not a 1:1, but could possibly yield interesting results (or not) by using a trumpet wav file as an IR.jens wrote: Tue Jul 20, 2021 6:02 pmWell, first of all, your goalpost moving is quite blatant here of course - "retaining the recognizable uniqueness of the instrument" is certainly no synonym of versatility.bermudagold wrote: Tue Jul 20, 2021 5:18 pm So according to your "practical results" , which algo verbs do you consider versatile?...can do convincing real spaces, as well as fantastical ones...can be used on a wide variety of instruments with very different transient and release characteristics while retaining the recognizable uniqueness of the instrument?...I dont demo everything, partially why Iclicked on the thread...so educate us

As far as versatility nothing TOUCHES Ariesverb. You actually help choose the algorythm being used. THAT's versatility... and the sound... I'm glad to have bought it.

Sunset Sound Studios is my go to. Sometimes I'd like to have something more "spacious" and almost bought Blackhole for that but I can find those usually in the Slate bundle. No gassing there!
What I like about SSS is that it's super flexible, really easy to use, sounds "right" in a mix and has the delight of doing the job w/o sounding like it's in the way. I really tried to hate it, demoed it for the full amount of time and paid full price for it. That hurt, but I use it every day so it ended up being worth it

After much resisting, I finally succumbed to a great deal on FabFilter Pro-R. Finally done with reverbs.

I hate to think the CPU hit for that ><

I can't remember if I already answered, but VRoom and Aether are my goto's but I do have a big soft spot for Ultraspace by Tone2 and Breverb by Overloud and Raum by NI.
Most versatile ? Definitely Aether.
