Some other threads just got my noggin turnin' and I'm happy with my case, my RAM (if that is backwards compatible) and my DVD and PSU and my very old fanless GC. Is there any point in buying all new just to have a "complete" build?

... I was to just upgrade the CPU, the MB, the CPU fan and a copy of windows (oem)?

You can reuse what is compatible and suitable.
If your current copy of Windows is OEM, probably you will need to buy a new license.

Right, but it's been years since I did that, pretty sure it was windows7.
