I'd suggest the following.
- Reverb or reverbs on sends
- EQ before and after the reverb
- Delays before and/or after the reverbs
- Compression after the reverb and/or delays

Then, Acon Verberate 2 features a bloom knobnoiseresearch wrote: ↑Tue Jul 27, 2021 7:40 amYeah. Tested it. Did not liked the sounds. The shimmer stuff is not mine. I would get ValhallaDSP Shimmer only for a bloom-like-reverb
Ah, for reverb tweakers, I should have mentionned that ToneBoosters reverb features a freeze option, a LFO, as well as shimmer. It's not my goto reverb for daily duties, but nonetheless it's nice when I want to experiment and get something different.
And again, Eareverb 2 is very good when you need to work with huge reverb taking a lot of space in the mix, because the deep editing features allows you to place it in the 3D space, and you can also fine tune the reverberators.

Neither I did under the hype about Blackhole. Plates sounds best on drums, vocal and guitars if you ask me. For something like Dark Ambient I prefer other kinds of reverbs. If I ever use one on stuff like that.noiseresearch wrote: ↑Tue Jul 27, 2021 7:35 amNever understood the "hype" about Blackhole. Definitely not my cup of tea soundwise never was.
I've also to admit that I never got why plate verbs are so popular. Maybe it's a guitarist thing? My drones, pads and ears are simply not happy with dedicated plate verbs... Maybe wrong settings.

1. Waves H-reverb is great for weird stuff and can do things few reverbs can do and it's 29$ occasionally.
2. Convolution reverb. You can load other kind of samples too and create a new sound. Only your imagination limit yourself.

Maybe take a look at audiothing spring, should complete your other options and can sound really beautifully dark to my ears...

What makes a "dark ambient" reverb different than any other reverb? Does it light a candle while it's decaying?
Anyway, Cloudseed gets my vote for the darkest and dankest ambient reverb. I hear it was hand-crafted in a cave.

With Blackhole it's the swirl of modulation on the reverb tail, that does it for me. it's very lush.noiseresearch wrote: ↑Tue Jul 27, 2021 7:35 amNever understood the "hype" about Blackhole. Definitely not my cup of tea soundwise never was.

True though, I am a guitarist first and foremost. I use the Strymon BlueSky and Neunaber Wet pedals on my pedalboard. Blackhole is the closest thing in the box.
Here's a song I used Blackhole and the Kuassa shimmer on:
