So its official... It's now possible to put together an entire 'professional' virtual studio for peanuts.

Anyway, after spending some time with Traction, looks very much like I'll continue writing and sequencing in Orion and using Traction for Final Mix only.

That's one fine mastering unit, and something I badly needed in my arsenal considering I'm halfway through writing an album.

But I was thinking, if you are only going to use Traction for Final Mix, will it be worth upgrading to T2? Will there be an updated version of FM on there

I surely don't like "in place editing" as the only choice for MIDI editing. It's a welcomed addition in Cubase SX 3 now, but usually my arrange is zoomed much smaller than what I'd need for MIDI editing, so extra editors with extra size levels are more or less some sort of must for me.

I had to get used to it aswell when I switched from SX. But zooming in and out with the mousewheel is a much more intuitive and fast way to adjust things. As you zoom in the snap changes to more precise, zoom out and snap changes to less precise. I love it. I've used it for over a year and never needed to change the snap ever . But the mousewheel is your friend when working with T, thats for sure.

Tip: hitting F5 and F8 at the same time will zoom out so you can see the entire edit horizontally and vertically. So I usually zoom in, tweak what needs to be tweaked, then F5 F8 and I'm back where I can see everything.

Tip2: Theres tons of ways of navigating around. Another method is if you place your cursor above the playback line you'll get an arrow, that means you can navigate left and right and zoom in and out by moving the mouse up and down. Its kinda wild and hard to describe. But you can zoom and move at the same time. Kinda like how Live does it.

Anyways, that Final Mix plugin was worth the download alone IMO. This defenitely can't be beaten at the price. Haven't got all around it yet, but it seems to be a good sounding and flexible device.

The crucial thing is to set Traction up properly. Use the shortcut 'Z' to expand/shrink the piano roll, and configure the options so that it expands to the desired size and with the desired octave range displayed. After that you're flying.

I was half way throught signing up for the free copy when I got to the part about what I'm gonna use it for. It mentioned midi editing as a choice and I suddenly remembered how midi editing is implemented in Tracktion and I stopped midsteam and closed the window. LOL. With midi editing like that, I don't even want it for free.

All you have to offer is foul mouthed slander and it's not even about the application at hand. where is final mix? I can't seem to find it, and it's not in the 'ignored files' list.
And where do I put it when I use it?

Hm, it was just there when I added a "new filter" to some track. I simply dragged the filter icon to a track (or the master output for that matter) and the selection box popped up fine.

including finalmix really is quite the bonus for me because i suck at mastering, still havent bought a mastering suite/vst, and can use all the help i can get. i just started testing out some of the presets and i can tell they are doing a better job than i was doing before. it may be time to remaster a few things. very, very cool.

I have absolutely no doubt that there are users out there capable of doing a better job, using 'better' (all subjective) plug-ins that they're familiar with. But I think I'm in the same boat as you. I've tried doing my own final mixes ("masters" if you want to use the term slightly incorrectly) before with my available software, and it's never worked as well as just selecting one of the presets in FinalMix and doing a minor tweak or two.

There are some things I'm a tweak junkie for, but 'mastering' is not one of them.

go to the 'settings'-tab:

When you select 'miscellaneous' you'll find an option to change the resizing behaviour.

Tip4:

Click on the 'option'-button in the lower left corner of the screen. When you select 'default midi editor vertical-scale' you can change how many octaves are shown at once by default.

cheers, I found it! I'd been looking up in the tracktion plugs, but it was located down in the third party plugs.
and I'm actually making progress now that I've been looking at the example tunes. Just getting a loop to cycle was driving me nuts till I found out the purpose of the in and out markers.

Tracktion for free is something nobody should miss !

Tracktion is the only sequencer i have.
I use it for mixing AND (pre)mastering and it works for me (even if it has big weakness that could have been fixed quickly without the MACKIE management ).

I tried FinalMix a rather short time but i didn't success in geting a good sound out of it.

The Workflow is not strange at all.. I think it's the more natural workflow you can imagine.
