Chapman Stick
Dude, that is so cool, the last time I saw one anywhere I have lived/been/played is the US was about 1982. So how could I buy one......I'd have to try it first!
Well, after jonesing for one since I first saw Tony Levin play his with Peter Gabriel many many years ago, I decided to finally just take the plunge and order a new one directly from SE (http://www.stick.com) without ever actually having touched one before! :D

Given my choice of course, I would've preferred to first...but I've never seen one used in a music store and I didn't know anyone locally who owned one so as to try it out. So it was definitely a bit of a gamble (and a very expensive one at that ;) )....but after spending forever lurking around the various Stick forums I thought I had a pretty good idea of what it would be like once I finally got my hands on one.
I'm happy to say that when it arrived, it was even better than I had hoped...the action on this thing is so low it's unbelievable: you barely have to touch the strings to sound the notes, and it sounds wonderful. I'm also finding it a lot easier to get the hang of playing than I thought it would be, which is also nice. :-)

Depends on what you call redundant.

Reaktor will get you close to anything if you find the 'ensemble' (= Reaktor file) you need. Maybe it's possible to make something like Wusikstation yourself, but:
- there is a learning curve involved, unless you know all about designing synths and FX and you'fe mastered Reaktor itself,
- it will take quite some time and effort,
- WusikStation is written in Assembler IIRC, that's as fast as it gets AFAIK. Reaktor will always give you a CPU overhead (because you can't run the ensembles by itself like real VST(i)s and because the ensembles aren't compiled)
- most people find a real VST(i) to be a little more user friendly than using a ensemble in Reaktor.
- WusikStation comes with a sample library that many here seem to love.

There are some Reaktor ensembles made by WilliamK (Wusik), you can get them free now on his site. One of them is a WaveStation emulation IIRC ("DaVector" ?).

Bottom line: if you like WusikStation and you can spare the money, why not?

Acoustica and Goldwave.
I could add Voxengo's CurveEQ, Elephant and Soniformer but those weren't temptations but vital additions. Same for Virtos.

I pre-ordered WusikStation as soon as it was announced. Two licenses, in fact: one for my brother, too! No temptation required: it was the synth I'd been waiting years for to replace my hardware synths.

I did grab the chance to get Audition 1.5 on academic discount through my wife's grad school credentials. ;)

Otherwise, I got a hell of a lot of comps and NFRs for beta and third-party dev work over the last year! Sadly, though, I don't use much of it regularly at all...
