I was pondering freeware computer music systems, and thought I'd write down some thoughts on a system made up entirely of freeware, donateware, magware type products. It's built around Soundbridge, alongside a 'suite' of instruments. Something that might be helpful for beginners or limited budgets.

I first thought you were referring to Computer Music mag. Actually when buying an issue, you get all of the previously published magware vst instruments and fx stuff (mostly stripped down versions of payware). Which is a quite big collection, with a lot of gems.
Browsing through them without the magazine guidance can be overwhelming though.

Nice thought. I'm on a practically non-existent budget so I'm all ears. I would like the suite of instruments to be optional. To be able to choose which I would use and which would just be bloatware to me. They could be selected upon download. Might save me some bandwidth too.Simon Thompson wrote: ↑Sun Aug 01, 2021 10:22 am I was pondering freeware computer music systems, and thought I'd write down some thoughts on a system made up entirely of freeware, donateware, magware type products. A great concept to check out is PureDyne: https://puredyne.org/
It's a USB bootable Linux image filled with open-source music software and can be used as a complete production environment.
That one was last updated around 2012, but I used it back then and can confirm that it's cool.
A newer one is Apodio (http://www.apodio.org/doku.php), last updated in Oct. 2020. That includes newer tools like VCV.
Most cutting-edge appears to be AVLinux: http://www.bandshed.net/avlinux/ It was just updated in June and is packed with plugins like Surge. Apparently the kernel is configured for low-latency audio as well. I'll have to check it out at some point.

Rompler/Sample Player: I had Sample Science Player down, although this doesn't seem to be around anymore. Not much in the way of freeware Romplers. Zampler maybe, if you can find some .sfz soundfonts. Sampletank 4 CS. Great sounds, although not very comprehensive.

That sort of thing..........
