Update -

The new rubber key contact strips that Edirol sent me fixed the problem. So there ya go.

I have tried it for a real short while at a shop and it seemed heavenly, if not out of reach pricewise. May I ask what about it that you disliked?

I tried one in the shop too. The touch is weird, comparing to Kawai ES1 I used to have. I just played couple notes and couldn't feel right.

that sounds great !

in fact, I've got a PCR-50 too (the one with the step-3 controllers, but Edirol UK told me it was a feature not a bug and I add to pay to have the step-1 controller). It was working fine, until I stopped using it for 4 months, after that only one octave over four was working again.
Following the recommendations found here (I'm happy to have discovered I was not the only one), I've opened the box and clean everything I could, but it didn't help. What helps is adding more depth to the back of the keys, but anyway it doesn't work so much. So for sure it's a contact problem with the rubber keys.
Since Edirol France/UK does not seem to answer, and since sending the keyboard back to UK will cost the price of a M-audio new keyboard, I would like to know how it is possible to reach directly the guy at Edirol US that sent you the new rubber key contact strips.

Not good!!

I've had a new PCR-50 for some time and have just tried to implement it in my system.

Three keys in the top octave are not sending MIDI; one of these is the BULK key:(

I've also got a constant (but not exacly regular like a clock) flashing data recieved indication on my AMT8. Anyone seen this happening with your PCRs?

well crap,
i have the Edirol pcr 50

maybe this is why they came out with new models at NAMM that use a different bed.

does it go with age or wear?
cause i'm sure i don't play as much as real keyboardist
could take me years to get the wear a Rick Wakeman type would get in a week.

I have a Roland [read Edirol] PC 160 and some of the keys starting playing up. So I took the thing apart careful and pulled the little rubber 'rings' off that are part of the contact mechanism for the keys (the other plastic/rubber parts seem fine).

The little pieces of rubber can be rotated and moved to other keys, and the contacts cleaned, but at some point I think I'm going to need some new ones [I can't go on missing some keys or pulling it apart and hoping cleaning will improve things forever] I'm guessing this is the same part as in the PCR-50. I believe edirol only really has one basic key assembly and they all suffer from the same issue. I guess it could be worse, the things could have a spring loaded tension based mechanism...

Dare I ask, how much did those rubber bits end up costing? I doubt Edirol Australia / representative company would be interested in selling a bloke a few odd looking rubber bits. Not when you can flog the latest and greatest for $690-$900AUS.

I tried a repair agent at one stage and they were trying to tell me that roaches get inside the Edirols and eat all the rubber contact strips + rubber sleeves etc...They wanted to charge a lot of money to pull it apart and replace anything to (hourly charge even just to look at it + any parts they thought might need replacing). If I had heating equipment I could probably melt myself some new rubber replacements...but it seems like a lot of trouble to go to for something they must be selling to repairers all over the world in bulk.

Sorry to bump this up. I have had the same problems with a PCR50 I bought 2nd hand a couple of years ago- worked fine then but no keys now working. Anyone know where I can source these rubber stips in the UK? Anywhere?! Any advice appreciated...

i owned a pcr50 and was ANOTHER PIECE OF CRAP like any pcr-xxx series (no pcr-m THAT are the GOOD ones!!! long live)

the only trick i figure it out to MAKE THE KEYS PLAY -respond-

is:

TAKE A HAIR DRIER (dunno how its written, bad english here!)

the thing woman use to dry their hair

well, get one,
and put the keyboard 90 degrees up (dcout/midi/usb panel looking to the roof) and then pass the hair dryer and move it trough the keys. push the keys with the hair dryer at MAX velocity.

after 5 minutes or less of that

ALL KEYS ARE WORKING.

dont ask me how i figure it out but IT TRUELY WORKS!!!

-and do yourself a favor and SELL THAT PIECE OF DYING-KEYS!

I'm having the same problem with my PCR-30. I emailed Edirol yesterday, and they responded this morning asking for the receipt and the reg number. my keyboard is 2 or 3 years old, but their response in looking promising.

ME TOO..phone 01792 700139 (rolanduk swansea) they'll get parts to you in a few days, and are reasonably priced ,including the rubber contact strips. I've also sourced replacement keys too, easy peasy.

From reading the rest of this thread, it looks like it the was earlist versions that had this problem - well I so, it would be tragic if they're still producing with this problem.

Yes i hope that the problem is fixed coz i just love it.
The Keys are excellent to play on compared to my old fatar..

I didn't see this thread the first time around... Although actually I posted one of my own which didn't get much response, so I'm surprised to see that so many other people have had this problem. I had the exact same thing with mine (the PCR-M50 to be precise)... After about 10 months, a couple of the keys were acting funny. Within a month after that, the whole span of the keyboard was fuX0red; every key generated a different kind of velocity (with 10% or so not working at all). I put off calling them for a while because I was busy and suddenly realized it was out of warranty. I had already been planning to upgrade to something with aftertouch anyway, so I just cursed Edirol & got on with my life.
Took it apart, tried various stuff, couldn't get it to work.

PCR-M50 HAS aftertouch, though. Just as a point on that. Not related to the overall poor experiences with quality by any of the users in this thread.

Some of the keys on my Edirol PCR-50 are dying!
