In the past, "using Reason" meant using the DAW but since v11 and Reason Rack Plugin it became pretty blurry as many people - incl. Reason Studio's own YT videos - use the term loosely to also describe using the Rack Plugin in other DAWs...

I was wondering what the actual stats for that are & made a poll on Reason's reddit, which will obviously be skewed towards the DAW use for historical reasons:

So, how about here on KvR?

I actually found in an odd way that the rack plugin uses less cpu in Live 11 than in their own DAW.
The DAW though looks fun and interesting but can quickly become an unorganized mess once you start adding automations

Have you tested that? It should be pretty easy to verify. I really doubt it, frankly.

Definitely! That's why we've been begging for sequencer updates for years, for example track folders that would help manage this (beautiful) mess... :(

I only use Reason Lite as a plugin in Studio One. :P

Actually just fired it up today, to play some with Subtractor.

Ok. Thought it doesn't matter much, when I'm just using Reason Lite, which I got for free.

I fired it up two times as a DAW, just to see how VST plugins work in it. They work great, actually. :)

I couldn't resist trying Reason+ for 3 months for €3. Have to say there are some really nice synths in there like Algorithm. They could offer a cheaper subscription for anyone who only wants to use the rack plugin and not the DAW.

NB) Nice seeing everything in hi-dpi graphics. Not sure how they have done that for every rack extension — wouldn't be surprised if they used some clever AI for upscaling.

No. Since the 1st day REs were introduced (2014 I believe?) it was a requirement that RE devs provide 5K assets and a 3D mesh+textures; the latter was dropped at some point. So all REs already have high-res assets :)

If that was the case, I'd have lost two years of my life. RE's were introduced in March 2012...

Technology - perhaps. But it was opened to 3rd party devs in 2014:

Propellerheads RE Shop was already being populated with RE's from third parties, Rob Papens Predator was the first RE I bought in August 2012.

made a small section of a track in both using exact same parameter and presets
Reason DAW sat around 20-23% cpu usage and ableton was around 12-15% Bitwig was odd and sat 30-40% and Studio One at 20%
I think I know why Bitwig ran high and that's due to UI rendering being on the CPU... They REALLY NEEEED TO FIX THAT :ud:
