One Synth Challenge #150: TAL-NoiseMaker (Aiynzahev wins!)

It seems I have hit a wall here, with maybe 12 instances loaded and 6 playing at the same time, Cubase consistently crashes after I pause for the first or second time. CPU load is very low. Not sure if I have the time and energy to troubleshoot this. Shame, it was a fun synth sound-wise. I have a similar issue with VSL sample libraries, but I can work around that by recording them as audio one by one. For this challenge a similar work-around is too time-consuming.

I did a trial of cubase and found it very clunky and slow on my computer. You could try a cross grade to a lighter DAW like Studio One, which works very quick on my computer. Might be cheaper than upgrading computer just yet.

I used Cubase for many years. When I switched to REAPER, it was literally twice as fast. I did a side-by-side comparison and REAPER could handle 2x the number of plugins with far fewer crashes (almost none). I have never looked back... I recently bought Cubase 11 second hand to test plugins with it. And nothing to do with my plugins, it has crashed at least once per day I've used it, often multiple times. No other DAWs are this bad that I've used. Bitwig never crashes (but plugins kill the audio engine). REAPER only crashes due to plugin failures (but now it can sandbox too). Live only crashes due to plugins. Cubase crashes whenever it feels like.

Try the Noisemaker 4.7, it's the last version just before GUI change.

I'll second the good luck with Reaper. I've been using it since 2011 (version 4 I think) and haven't had a single crash that wasn't caused by a sketchy plugin.

@thefrozensea why not grab a copy of Reaper - the trial licence lasts for 60 days, and is the full version (there isn't anything else!). I know it's not to everyone's taste, but it can get you up and running.

Thanks for the replies! I did try Reaper a little bit earlier but the GUI felt really weird to me. I understand there are lots of different skins for Reaper though so that shouldn't really be an issue. Also tried Traction Waveform Free but after writing some songs in Cubase with the arranger track etc I really feel at home there. But now that you people mention it, I do want to try Reaper again, if it lets me run significantly more instances of the plugins I like that might actually be enough for me to switch.

Just so there's no confusion: I switched from Cubase to Reaper, and that was a very good switch (2x performance, more stability). But ultimately, I switched to Bitwig because of it's incredibly good modulation capabilities and it being more geared towards electronic music production. Reaper probably has the best audio editing of any DAW available -- e.g. if you're recording a band or something of the sort, it really can't be beat. Similarly, for mixing stems and mastering it is probably one of the best DAWs on the market. I ended up having a lot of MIDI issues with it, though: I could never get the timing right (tried Windows, Mac, different audio interfaces) and the MIDI editor has some quirks that annoyed me enough to switch. Bitwig isn't perfect, either. But almost anything is better than Cubase

Maybe try exporting your midi from Cubase and import to Reaper and see how well that goes??

The MIDI editor etc needs more TLC, never been the best in the box. For basic stuff it's OK.

Thanks for the info Reaper could be my thing then, I'm not really an electronic music producer in the sense that I program lots of midi in the DAW. I come from a rock band background so I play most of my hardware or software synths with hardware controllers, but I also use the DAW heavily during writing to structure my track, try out arrangements and so on.

I will duplicate the 8 bars of music I had written in Cubase for this challenge before it crashed on me, and see if Reaper is up to the task

@tfs ... worth a go ... and remember in Reaper, right-click is also context sensitive, and leads to many options etc ... if you have a drum track (ie all percussion on one track ), then on the Action list there's one which takes each drum and creates a separate track which you can then dump your vsti on! In the actions pane search/filter look for "explode" and it's at the top of the list. I have it set to a keyboard shortcut.

Hope it works out and you can get a track done. Once you have your audio, mixing should be a breeze!

It's been used all over in the past. Use it for delay/reverb and it's fine, just not for sound design somehow.
