The most versatile in my opinion is the G&L Doheny V12. Any MFD pickup is pure joy to play with, but these humbuckers with serial/parallel/single coil and passive high cut and bass cut take the cake.
I‘ll give a close second to the PRS S2 Standard. Really nice and meaty split sounds and the humbuckers just do the 90s Metal thing perfectly.

Does Ibanez still have the HH 5-way that does Neck Series-Neck Parallel-Both Series-Both Split-Bridge Series? That’s a great wiring. All good sounds. My RG3120 is one of my all-time favorites. Kills PRS.Nobdi wrote: Sat Aug 14, 2021 5:02 pm I'm all Ibanez on this one.
From my collection I would say the most versatile is my JEM - maybe even my JS1 but the neck is not as fast as the JEMs and you don't get them with the middle SC any more.
If you don't want to spend that money you could also go for a Japan RG and swap the PUs.

Jup, they still have that in at least a few RG models (maybe more ?!?).
I still prefer HSH thought.
Sometimes I even go one further and make the Humbuckers switchable to SCs too.
In a DIY Strat that I scalloped I've put in dual blade HBs in SC size and did the above wiring.
The only way to get more switching options would be an original Brian May wiring with all those mini switches I guess.

That sounds perfect. I’ve thought of using those EMG’s that have both a single coil and a humbucker under the cover but I’m worried about using active pickups with fuzz pedals.Nobdi wrote: Sat Aug 14, 2021 6:55 pm Jup, they still have that in at least a few RG models (maybe more ?!?).

Gibson and Epiphone used to put out a guitar with a bunch of pickup options...

best all round guitar, sounds like "partner speak" for "haven't you got enough guitars?"

Do you remember that B-Bender Gibson? That should have been based on a Nighthawk.Magic Russ wrote: Mon Aug 16, 2021 3:55 pm Gibson and Epiphone used to put out a guitar with a bunch of pickup options...
Personally, I don't need half of those sounds and would actively avoid several of them.

"Why do you need all those guitars? Won't just one do?"
I own and play all sorts of guitars. But SG's have been my #1's for years.
I guess that makes me a a dirty filthy old man too! LOL!!

Most versatile guitar?
Of the "classics" I think a Strat ... possibly HSS on balance.
PRS HH or Ibanez RG HSH with coil-tapping and other complex switching options are my best jack-of-all-trades, do-most-things instruments ... maybe not masters of anything ... but in my hands, the limitations are not the instrument...

With Ibanez, you're mostly right about "not masters of anything" but there have been a few stand outs. The RG3120, for example, has a maple top and mahogany body, like a Les Paul, and sounds completely different from my basswood Ibanez's.TobyB wrote: Wed Aug 18, 2021 1:35 pm Most versatile guitar?

I tried one at Sound Control, Whitehall Rd in Leeds in the late 1990's early 2000's. I wasn't impressed, I would imagine they have improved since then. Any users care to chip in?
Tele twang is hard to find in other models.

Isn't there a Boss VG that emulates tunings and guitars?
