First of, I don't want to be a BoC clone, I'm just interested in putting my own brand of artistry on sound inspired by their work.

Now, does anyone have any tips or links or tutorials that are aimed at producing those kind of BoC drum sounds that they're so famous for???

they use a lot of 808 hits but they are usually mixed with other percussion elements as well. Take 1969 for example, its an 808 pattern with a "live" kit over it.

Another example is music is math, also from geogaddi. Distorted drums. Many ways to achieve this effect.
Ive gotten similiar drum sounds by using tri-dirt.

try running routing each drum sound to its own mixer channel in your host and open up several instances of tri-dirt.

To me the drum sounds from BOC are the easiest to emulate. Whats difficult is to get those really fat and clear (bell-like) synth sounds that BOC and especially Ulrich Schnauss get.

Ideas?

Well like I said, I'm not trying to emulate a BoC track, so I have my own pad style. But if you like, I could trade tips with you?

Which songs did you have in mind with the bell-like sounds?

I've got tri-dirt already. Thanks for the tip though, I'll try it.

are you familiar with ulrich schnauss? If so the first track on his latest LP "A Strangley Isolated Place" is called Gone Forever. After the long intro theres a pad that comes in at the same time as the beat. It almost sounds like an FM Rhodes (bell like) but it has sooo much depth, maybe theres a sine wave running an octave lower.

If you arent familiar with Ulrich then how 'bout the pad at the beginning of music is math.

Yeah I know the sound you mean. Well Absynth would be my first port of call. I'll have a play and see what I can come up with.

Yeah, I really like their synth sounds, I'm sure they use alot of analog...I love that sound on the opening track of geogaddi, it's so textural and warm.

I would think maybe an additive synth would have a chance of creating sounds like this also. whaddya think?

Definitely yeah. Something like Cameleon would have a great chance of recreating that kind of sound.

hmmmm... well my first attempt didn't go that well. It doesn't sound remotely BoC like, but it does sound kinda cool, so I figured I'd post it anyway.

I've heard they use some kind of super slow down flanger on they pads to get their particular 'blurred' and 'moving' sound.

If you can get hold of it, CM did a four-page BoC tutorial in #78 (October).

I just dredged up an old topic on Reasonstation which was about BoC. This lead me to the NI website ... turns out BoC use Absynth.

So maybe those pads aren't analog after all.

i did this a while back,and while not being an exact emulation or even to be honest that good it does have a little something
the pad sound is an old freebie called anenome,it had a minor prob with detuning in one oscillator or something which in my opinion made it better for that sort of sound

hey, in Computer Music magazine there was precisely an article on how to sound like BoC, and they sort of created a BoC-like song with some determinate plug ins. maybe it would give you ideas!
